On August 12, Bay PianoFest 2026 welcomed Professor Boris Berman back to the masterclass stage for another session with our students. šŸŽ¹

Drawing on his extensive experience as a performer and educator, Professor Berman continued to share his thoughtful and detailed approach to musical interpretation. The class encouraged students to listen deeply, consider the ideas behind the music, and make thoughtful choices that bring greater clarity and individuality to their performances.

It was another valuable opportunity for our students to learn from Professor Berman, engage in musical conversation, and explore new possibilities in their playing.

On August 12, Bay PianoFest 2026 welcomed Professor Garrick Ohlsson, Professor of Piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Chair of the Jury for the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition, for a morning masterclass.

With a career shaped by decades of performance, teaching, and exploration across the piano repertoire, Professor Ohlsson brought a remarkable depth of experience to the studio. Working with music ranging from the Classical tradition of Beethoven to the Romantic world of Chopin, he encouraged our students to consider how different musical languages call for different approaches to sound, phrasing, character, and expression.

Rather than offering a single formula for interpretation, Professor Ohlsson encouraged students to listen closely, experiment, and make choices that feel both purposeful and authentic. The class explored how thoughtful attention to detail, musical imagination, and a strong sense of intention can bring greater depth and individuality to a performance.

On August 11, Bay PianoFest 2026 presented Student Concert Series V, the final student concert of the festival.

The evening brought together a remarkable group of Artists, each offering a distinct musical voice and perspective. Across the program, the audience experienced an extraordinary range of sound, character, and expression, with performances that moved between intimacy, lyricism, energy, drama, and imagination.

As the final concert of Bay PianoFest 2026, the evening was also a celebration of the artistic growth and experiences shared throughout the festival. After days of lessons, masterclasses, forums, and performances, it was especially meaningful to see our Artists return to the stage and share what they had developed during their time at Bay PianoFest.

On August 11, Bay PianoFest 2026 continued with another Piano Forum, bringing together Professors Enrico Elisi ENRICO ELISI (TCU), HieYon Choi HieYon Choi (Peabody), Alan Chow (Eastman), Alvin Chow (Oberlin), and Yoshikazu Nagai (SFCM) for an afternoon of performance, conversation, and musical exchange.

The forum offered each pianist a chance to share their interpretation while hearing different perspectives from the faculty and fellow performers. Rather than simply presenting finished performances, the session created space for listening, discussion, and reflection, allowing students to think more deeply about the choices behind their playing.

With music spanning different periods and styles, the afternoon highlighted the many ways a pianist can approach character, structure, sound, and expression. Each performance opened a different window into the artistā€™s way of thinking, making the forum a meaningful exchange of ideas as much as a concert.

On August 11, Bay PianoFest 2026 welcomed Professor Enrico Elisi ENRICO ELISI , Professor of Piano at Texas Christian University, for an afternoon masterclass.

Known for his wide-ranging experience as a performer and educator, Professor Elisi brought an open and exploratory spirit to his work with our students. The class encouraged each pianist to consider not only what is written in the score, but also how musical ideas can be shaped, developed, and communicated through performance.

Across the afternoon, students explored different approaches to phrasing, character, movement, and expression. Professor Elisi encouraged them to make deliberate choices while remaining responsive to the natural flow of the music, creating performances that feel both considered and spontaneous.

On August 11, Bay PianoFest 2026 welcomed Professor HieYon Choi HieYon Choi , Professor of Piano at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, for a morning masterclass.

Professor Choi brought a distinctive approach to the class, encouraging students to engage with the music from within and to discover what lies beneath the written score. Rather than approaching interpretation as a fixed answer, she invited each pianist to question, experiment, and listen for possibilities that could deepen their connection with the work.

The morning unfolded through conversations about musical character, phrasing, contrast, and the way an idea can gradually unfold through sound. Students were encouraged to trust their ears, make conscious artistic decisions, and allow their interpretations to develop with greater freedom and conviction.

On August 10, Bay PianoFest Student Concert Series IV brought BPF Artists for an evening of powerful performances and musical individuality.

As the festival approached its final days, the concert reflected the growth, dedication, and artistic perspectives that students had continued to develop throughout their time at Bay PianoFest. Each pianist brought a distinct voice to the stage, sharing not only the results of their preparation, but also their own relationship with the music.

The evening moved through music of great intensity, imagination, and character, offering the audience a wide range of artistic personalities and approaches. From moments of dramatic energy to intimacy and reflection, each performance contributed its own voice to the concert.

On August 10, our Piano Forum brought together Professors Alan Chow (Eastman), Alvin Chow (Oberlin), Enrico Elisi (TCU), and Boris Berman (Yale) for an afternoon of performance, conversation, and musical exchange.

Six students took the stage, with each performance opening the door to a different kind of conversation. Our faculty shared perspectives on interpretation, sound, structure, musical character, and the many decisions that shape a performance.

One of the most valuable parts of the Piano Forum is hearing multiple artistic perspectives in the same room. Students have the opportunity not only to perform, but also to listen as different musicians respond to the same questions in their own ways. These conversations remind us that artistic growth often comes from remaining curious, open, and willing to see familiar music from a new perspective.

August 10 at Bay PianoFest 2026 continued with a masterclass given by Professor Boris Berman, Professor of Piano at the Yale School of Music.

With decades of experience as a performer, artist, and teacher, Professor Berman brought a thoughtful and highly detailed approach to his work with our students. The class invited pianists to look closely at the music, consider the purpose behind each musical decision, and develop a stronger sense of clarity and direction in their performances.

Through careful listening and discussion, students explored how details can contribute to a larger musical idea, and how a deeper understanding of the score can lead to greater freedom and individuality in performance.

The evening of August 9 brought another Student Concert to the stage at Bay PianoFest 2026.

Throughout the festival, our students had spent days learning, performing, listening, and exchanging ideas with faculty and one another. This concert offered another opportunity to bring those experiences to the stage, with each pianist sharing their own musical perspective and individuality with the audience.

The program moved through a wide range of musical styles and traditions, reflecting the diverse interests and artistic voices within our student community. From classical forms to the more personal and imaginative worlds of later repertoire, each performance brought its own character and sense of discovery.
