S.A.M Singapore Math – Common Questions from Parents

1. Is the S.A.M curriculum helpful for students in the U.S. and other Western countries? How is it related to school math?
Absolutely. The Singapore Math curriculum and pedagogy have been adopted in many countries across Europe, the U.S., and Asia. S.A.M Math is based on the world-renowned Singapore Math framework. Since 1995, international assessments like TIMSS and PISA have consistently ranked Singapore at the top in global math performance.
Math is a universal language — its core concepts remain largely the same across countries. S.A.M helps children deeply understand these fundamental concepts, which are essential for long-term success in math.
In fact, the S.A.M curriculum aligns well with what schools teach. Similar math concepts are revisited each year with increasing levels of difficulty. Beyond academics, S.A.M also develops important cognitive skills such as metacognitive awareness, heuristic thinking, problem-solving, independent learning, and self-discipline.
2. What happens during an S.A.M class?
Each week, your child’s S.A.M instructor reviews all homework mistakes from the previous lesson. We explain the correct methods and help students understand the root of their errors. After that, a new set of worksheets is assigned, and teachers introduce key learning objectives along with new math concepts.
S.A.M lessons often incorporate manipulatives, games, and hands-on activities to create a fun and engaging learning environment. All our teachers use a combination of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach to make math meaningful and accessible.

🔍 Making Division Visible and Touchable!
Do you remember how you learned division as a child?
In SAM Singapore Math classrooms, math is not just numbers on paper — it’s something kids can actually see, touch, and experience!
In the photos, our student is learning division in a hands-on way. Instead of memorizing formulas or following rigid steps, we guide children to understand the concept of division through physical interaction.
Using specially designed manipulatives for ones, tens, and hundreds, division becomes a real-life “sharing game.”
For example, when solving “81 ÷ 3,” the student takes out 8 tens blocks and 1 unit block, then distributes them equally into 3 groups. They physically divide the blocks, see how many are in each group, and discover what’s left over — if any.
By breaking down division into “grouping” and “sharing” through tangible tools, children build a solid understanding of what it really means to divide, what “equal parts” are, and what a “remainder” is.
More importantly, they’re developing a strong number sense — the foundation for confident problem-solving.

Who Really Shapes a Child’s Summer? It’s the Parents.

Many parents believe the biggest gap between children comes from whether they take enough “extra classes” or “sign up for enough summer programs.”

But in reality, the biggest difference comes from one thing:
Whether parents can provide a consistent, well-executed daily structure.

Today we’re not talking about test scores or anxiety.
We’re sharing 3 powerful habits worth building with your child this summer👇
01 | A predictable routine is the root of all productivity
Summer often disrupts sleep and mealtime rhythms, which quietly affects attention span, memory, and emotional regulation.
📌 Tip: Keep your child’s wake-up, meals, and physical activity at regular times. Even if “on break,” don’t be “all over the place.” Stability in rhythm = emotional safety.
02 | Let kids relax, but not “drift”
A good summer plan isn’t cramming from 8am to 10pm.
Instead, use blocks of focused time + themed goals. For example:
Morning: complete one core subject task (math or reading)
Afternoon: movement + reading + curiosity time
Evening: open-ended quiet time (journaling, music, or documentaries)
