Topic: Intro to Keyboard Skills: Melodic Explorations and Improvisation
What are some defining characteristics of a memorable melody? This workshop will explore a selection of popular melodies ranging from Classical and Romantic piano and chamber music repertoire to Broadway standards and today’s pop songs, focusing on voice-leading principles and how composers play with listeners’ expectations. Students will share their own favorite examples and learn to improvise and write simple melodies based on given incipits in various keys and characters.
