What if the best way to learn something difficult is to stop looking for the right answer?

In our newest episode of Thinking Out Loud, we discuss how John Hagen brings that question to his math, computer science, and robotics classrooms, where students are encouraged to puzzle through problems, experiment, collaborate, and discover that there can be more than one way forward. From a career in the early days of the internet to creating a fantasy football math curriculum and building JCHS’s robotics program, John has followed a willingness to explore what comes next. In a world increasingly shaped by AI, he argues that versatility, creativity, logical thinking, and the confidence to take on the unfamiliar may be among the most valuable things students can learn.

Some friendly competition, a lot of laughter, and plenty of new connections!

Our students stepped out of the classroom today for grade bonding activities. From team tug-of-war to creating elaborate secret handshakes, students were already getting closer with each other just days into the new school year.

Here’s to a year full of fun and new friendships!

Some sights from the first full week of school ✏️

Students are already diving deep into their studies of math, science, Jewish history, and so much more.

Welcome Back Wolves! What a day!

We loved seeing the joy in everyone reconnecting and the community coming back together. Students and ProCom caught up after a long summer, new student-athletes got their uniforms, the school heard from the new exec team, and seniors got to enjoy the annual tradition (and annually foggy) Senior Sunrise. And this was just the start of what’s sure to be a year of learning, growth, and excitement!

Go Wolves! 🐺

Season 2 of Thinking Out Loud with JCHS is officially here! 🎙️

In our season opener, we sit down with JCHS alumna Keira Gerstley, ‘25. In the episode, Keira reflects on how being truly known and supported helped her discover passions she never expected—from mathematics and physics to Jewish studies, leadership, and Model UN. We talk about how JCHS challenged her to think across disciplines, engage openly with perspectives different from her own, and take intellectual and personal risks. Most importantly, Keira reflects on the vulnerability it takes to put yourself out there—and how having a community of teachers and peers cheering you on can make all the difference.

And a quick look back: Season 1 of Thinking Out Loud was downloaded more than 2,500 times across 41 countries! 🌎

Thank you to all of our listeners who helped make that possible. Season 2 is just getting started—listen, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, and share Thinking Out Loud with a friend!

We were thrilled to welcome the class of 2️⃣0️⃣3️⃣0️⃣ to campus today for their 9th grade orientation!

The class brought their energy and joy to campus while hearing from their teachers, teaming up with the class of ‘27 to compete with ProCom in a friendly game of Generation Gap (the students won, but who’s keeping score?), and leaving their mark on the school on day 1 with their class banner!

Special thanks to the senior buddies who volunteered their time to help make the 9th graders feel at home from the first moment they stepped into 1835 Ellis.

Welcome to the pack, Wolves! 🐺

Class of 2027 got up early this morning to get a head start with Ms. Cook’s College Workshop. Seniors got advice on essays, tried a few mock interviews with a panel of college reps, and started thinking about how to make the most of the scores of college visits that will take place at JCHS this fall.

Looking forward to a great year, Wolves!
