Modern Italian Art. Entirely in Italian.

This Fall, join us for a new 6-week cultural course exploring the artistic movements that transformed Italy and the world between 1900 and 1945.

Taught by Professor Simone Ciglia, Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Oregon and internationally recognized art historian and curator, the course will take you from Liberty to Futurism, Cubism, Metaphysical Painting, Surrealism, and beyond.

Designed for students at the Avanzato level and above, it's a unique opportunity to deepen your Italian while discovering one of the most fascinating periods in the history of art.

Questo autunno ti invitiamo a scoprire i movimenti artistici che hanno trasformato l'Italia e il mondo tra il 1900 e il 1945.

Do you know the real story of North Beach?

San Francisco’s most iconic Italian neighborhood has layers that most people — even locals — never get to see. Hidden courtyards, literary landmarks, centuries of immigrant history, and the kind of architecture that stops you mid-sentence.

On September 19, our teacher Mattia leads a 3-hour bilingual walking tour through it all: Saints Peter and Paul Church, the Porziuncola Nuova, Casa Fugazi, City Lights Bookstore, and more. The tour ends at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, where your ticket includes a complimentary drink.

No Italian required. Open to everyone.

Il quartiere italiano più iconico di San Francisco ha strati che la maggior parte delle persone — anche chi ci abita — non ha mai visto. Cortili nascosti, monumenti letterari, secoli di storia dell’immigrazione e un’architettura che ti ferma a metà frase.

Three ingredients. Infinite technique.

Pasta, Pecorino Romano, black pepper — that’s all it takes to make Cacio e Pepe. And yet, getting that silky, creamy sauce right without a single drop of cream is one of the most technically fascinating challenges in Roman cooking.

This Sunday, September 13, Emilia guides you through it step by step — the technique, the timing, the vocabulary, and the wine from Lazio to go with it.

Three pastas. Three workshops. One unforgettable series.

The Holy Trinity of Roman Pasta is a three-part cooking and wine experience born from a collaboration between Istituto Italiano Scuola and Emilia Aiello of Cittavino & Co.

Over three Sunday evenings, you’ll learn to prepare three of Rome’s most celebrated pasta dishes — Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara, and Amatriciana — from scratch, by hand, with technique. Each workshop includes the history of the dish, Italian culinary vocabulary, a live demonstration, hands-on cooking, wine from Lazio, and of course, the chance to eat what you made.

The first class — Cacio e Pepe — takes place on Sunday, September 13 at Enoteca Molinari in Oakland.

Space is limited to 12 participants. This will sell out.

August is almost over. In Italy, this is a bittersweet moment.

The sea, the slow mornings, the long dinners — they linger a little longer in your memory than you expect.

But September brings something else: new courses, new conversations, and new reasons to love Italian.


Agosto sta per finire. In Italia, è un momento dolceamaro.

Meet Griseldo.

Born in Berat, Albania, he moved to Italy at age 10, growing up in Saronno, a small city near Milan. He studied Italian Literature at the University of Milan, spent time at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, and just completed his PhD in Italian at Stanford University in 2025.

His path — from Albania to northern Italy to California — has given him a perspective on language and culture that is genuinely unique. And now he brings all of it into the classroom at IIS.

When he’s not teaching, you’ll find him on a bike. He likes to call himself a “professional amateur” cyclist — which tells you everything about how he approaches the things he loves.

We’re very happy to have him with us.

Vi presentiamo Griseldo.

Nato a Berat, in Albania, si è trasferito in Italia a 10 anni, crescendo a Saronno, vicino Milano. Ha studiato Letteratura Italiana all’Università di Milano, ha trascorso un periodo all’École Normale Supérieure di Parigi, e nel 2025 ha completato il suo dottorato in Italian Studies a Stanford.

Il suo percorso — dall’Albania all’Italia settentrionale alla California — gli ha dato una prospettiva sulla lingua e sulla cultura davvero unica. E ora porta tutto questo in classe, all’IIS.

Quando non insegna, lo trovate in bici. Si definisce un “professionista dilettante” del ciclismo — il che dice tutto su come si approccia alle cose che ama.

Siamo molto felici di averlo con noi.
