I almost quit performing because I believed my body wasn’t “right” for the stage.
Growing up in the Britney Spears era, the pressure on young women in music to look a certain way was intense: skinny, flawless, “perfect.” I internalized those impossible standards, convinced I had to shrink myself, hide parts of me, and apologize for the vessel that carried my voice and soul.
For years, I let that anxiety overshadow my talent. I’d step on stage and worry more about how my body looked than the music I was there to share. And while we’ve started to see small shifts in recent years, the pressure is still very real. It’s still causing talented singers to question whether they’re worthy of being seen and heard.
I’m not perfect, and I haven’t fully arrived. I still have days when old insecurities resurface, but I’m committed to showing up anyway. I’m committed to sharing the journey honestly and fiercely advocating for the little girl inside me who once believed she wasn’t enough. And I’m here to advocate just as fiercely for every woman who’s ever questioned her worth because of how she looks or how much space she takes up.
Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
You have the right to take up space.
You have the right to own your voice, exactly as you are, right now.
If you’ve ever felt this too, drop a ❤️ below. You’re not alone, and I’m right here with you, fighting beside you.
