We are proud to celebrate alongside the 1882 Foundation as they just unveiled a stunning mural honoring Mabel Ping-Hua Lee — a Chinese American suffragist whose story deserves to be known by everyone.

In 1912, Mabel rode on horseback through a suffrage parade in New York City — a full year before Inez Milholland's iconic ride in Washington, D.C. She fought tirelessly for women's right to vote, even as that right was denied to her under the Chinese Exclusion Act. Her courage, her conviction, and her refusal to be erased from this history are exactly what SUFFS is about.

This Fourth of July, we celebrate the values at the heart of our democracy: liberty, justice, and due process. These values mean people shouldn't be deported without an opportunity to present their case and have their fair day in court. And it means they shouldn't have their rights stripped away based on politics. As our nation marks 250 years, we should recommit to making our immigration system reflect the principles we celebrate today. America's promise is only as strong as our willingness to uphold it.
