Happy Moon cake Festival 🥮
It’s hard to believe we’re already about a month into classes! Students at all different levels of Mandarin are slowly but surely finding their groove. And of course, 小小編and 迷你編are becoming more and more aware of the *special advantages* of being Taiwanese Americans. 🤣🇹🇼🇺🇸
Zhuyin (Bopomofo) and Pinyin are definitely helpful tools for getting started. After 14 lessons, we gradually move into recognizing and writing Mandarin characters. For school-aged children, this is not only about learning characters—it’s also a great way to strengthen those fine motor skills, especially since kids growing up in the U.S. tend to have fewer opportunities to write by hand.
And let’s be honest: turning Mandarin characters into long-term memory takes practice! The differences between Eastern and Western educational approaches are simply part of the process. There’s no need to worry about whether your child is “good at Chinese.” Give them time, give them consistent practice, and use the right strategies. With just a little practice each day and my character-learning methods, learning Mandarin characters can become much more manageable.
I’m taking a rare solo trip this time to see the world, broaden my perspective, and hopefully come home with some new teaching inspiration. ✈️🌏✨
See you in class! 😊
