Call to Action & Funding Update. This moment needs our movement.

In case you missed it, San Diego’s arts and culture leaders and community members are showing up in response to Mayor Gloria’s proposed budget cuts to vital arts & culture funding in 2027. Read the letter we submitted to the San Diego Union Tribune and other submissions from organizations around our county.

There’s still time to make our voices heard! On May 27th, at 4:30pm our community is coming to together for a press conference and rally at the Civic Center before the 6 pm City Council Meeting. Join us if you can!

Can’t make it? Take 2 minutes to email or call your city councilmember to tell them why you oppose these proposed cuts.

Stay tuned and follow and for more information and updates.

Vanguard Culture’s Art Garden is officially this week on April 30th! We are so excited to be part of this event and enjoy an evening of art, storytelling, dance, and community care, connecting San Diego to a real-time national storytelling movement.

Vanguard Culture, in partnership with UC San Diego Craft Center and the Depot residency program, presents ART GARDEN, a multidisciplinary community gathering celebrating visual art, storytelling, dance, and collective care, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 6:00–9:00 PM at UCSD Park & Market in downtown San Diego (1100 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92101).

“ART GARDEN is about creating space for stories to take root. By bringing people together through art, performance, and care–both locally and across the country– we’re planting seeds of connection that can grow far beyond this single evening,” stated Susanna Peredo Swap, Founder and Executive Director of Vanguard Culture.

The evening will feature a dynamic lineup of performances, exhibitions, and interactive activities, including Culture Shock, Blindspot Collective, Storytellers of San Diego, and many more!

“Culture Shock San Diego believes in the power of movement as a tool for healing, truth-telling, and collective liberation. ART GARDEN creates space for stories that are
often pushed to the margins and invites us to engage with one another through care, dignity, and embodied connection,” stated Sebastian Martinez, Executive Director of Culture Shock San Diego.

Mayor Todd Gloria is proposing to slash arts and culture funding by more than 85% in the FY2027 budget, eliminating nearly all arts and cultural funding. This would devastate local organizations that rely on that support, including Culture Shock San Diego.

Our voices matter. Here’s how you can take action before the budget is finalized:
1. Contact your representatives
Visit artsandculturesd.org (http://artsandculturesd.org/) to submit a letter to your council member and the mayor. You can also call or email your rep directly using the form on their site. Cuts to arts funding cause real harm to our community.
2. Share your art and your story
Send photos showing the impact of the arts in your life to mailto:[email protected] and help make the case for why this funding matters.
3. Write a letter to the San Diego Union-Tribune
Submit 150–200 words to mailto:[email protected], letters begin publishing April 26th!
4. Show up and stay engaged
Attend upcoming budget hearings and follow local arts organizations for updates:
    •    May 4 (6 PM): Public Input Hearing
    •    May 4–8: Budget Review Committee Hearings
    •    May 18 (6 PM): City Council Public Input Hearing
