I made a new YouTube video for some of my favorite Bass lines from one of my favorite albums. Check Your Head by the Beastie Boys.
It’s just a few choice cuts. There are too many great ones to do them all. I’ll put a link in the comments or just go to Matt LaBarber music on YouTube. It’ll be the most recent video. Enjoy!

LaBarber the Album turns 4 years old today! A snapshot of a moment in time where i decided to be my own band instead of being in someone else’s. I wrote 11 of the 12 tracks and played Guitar, Bass, Keys and sang. Still very proud of this one. Got a lot more music in the works: I’ll put a link to the album in case you are interested in hearing it or buying a copy on Vinyl, Cd Or Digital

We lost one of the baddest men to ever hold 4 strings yesterday. Aston “Family Man” Barrett. Anyone who plays Reggae or really any groove based music likely has been influenced by this man. Weather they know it or not. He is the essence of unselfish, groovy, pocket playing.

One of my favorite things to do on my YouTube channel is medley videos of songs that have one or two riffs played repeatedly. I play the song along to the track and provide tabs. That way anyone who wants to could learn the song and play along with it.

If you don’t have friends to jam with or a band, or the time or confidence to do that just yet, playing along with songs is an amazing way to have fun with your instrument and also improve your timing for when you do have the time or courage to play with others.

Please leave a comment with other bands/artists or albums you’d like to see me make videos for. Although these take a long time and are way more difficult to do than a lesson for one song or concept, they are what I would want to see and there is not a lot of content out there like this. Thanks for watching and reading and letting me know what you would like to see/hear from me.

04/02/2023

Have you subscribed to my YouTube channel yet? I post brand new tutorials every week and short riffs in between of some of my favorite and guitar as well as content to help people improve on their instruments. Check out my page and subscribe today so I can keep on sharing my love of music with everyone!

I’ll put a link to my page in the comments ❤️

Stone Temple Pilots: The Robert DeLeo Interview 03/30/2023

I have always thought Robert DeLeo was so underrated as a bass player and songwriter. People often dismiss Stone Temple Pilots As “90s rock”. But if you try to learn any of their songs on Guitar or Bass or if you make the mistake of trying to sing them you realize this band is a cut above.

Such an interesting interview view this gentle, humble, incredibly talented musician. It’s a long one, but worth a watch for sure,

Student Story: Mana is a music lover but I could tell his interest was starting to diminish. This happens to a lot of students as they realize how long it’s going to take to get as good as they want. Mana noticed a poster on my wall of an album cover of mine and asked about it. I mailed him a copy of the record. All of the sudden his interest has blossomed all over again and he is EXCITED to learn and even wants me to teach him some of my songs. I never would have thought that him hearing something I created would be inspiring but we are all learning. I certainly am. I guess for some knowing your teacher is not just a teacher helps. So thankful that it all worked out this way. Someday I hope to get a copy of his album in the mail ❤️

Thank you all so much for your kind words and support of my YouTube channel. As well as my reels on here. It means so much to me.

As my amount of content grows I am trying to make it easier for people to find videos that are relevant to them by making playlists.
Also hopefully to introduce someone to a song they might enjoy playing that they didn’t know to search for.
Please check them out and enjoy! Hopefully you find a new song or bassline that becomes one you’ll always play. And if you haven’t already please take a moment to subscribe to the channel or like/comment on some videos. I love helping people learn about music and you’re all helping me do that.
Much ❤️

I was pretty proud of this one and i love this song. For some reason it didn’t get as much love as I thought it would have, perhaps there are just too many versions of it.
But you can help me bump it up by watching/liking/sharing it.
And it will REALLY help me if you learn how to play it because that’s my ULTIMATE goal. I’ll put a link in the comments.
Happy Bassin’ ❤️ Matty

I have been teaching music for a long time. I’d say the number one problem people have after they learn a few chords is making their strums sound consistent and musical.
Instead of complicated down, up patterns with long pauses, i have some suggestions in this video for keeping it simple and rhythmic.
If you know anyone who you think can benefit from this video please share it! I’ll put a link in the comments.
I love helping people get better!!
Thank you ❤️ Matty

I have a tendency to isolate when i am overwhelmed. I miss all of my friends in SD tremendously and I also miss my friends in NY. Because I am so close to them but so far away as I am still adapting to working online in multiple time zones. Teaching lessons from the early afternoon until very late into the evening with my West Coast people. Also taking time to connect with my love in between our busy schedules and planning our futures together. I have felt a little overwhelmed.
As a result I haven’t really connected with my friends in the meaningful ways in which I like to. It was a source of confusion and sadness for me.

As is often the case, when something is troubling me, it’s best to sing about it. I was addressing some of these concerns with my friend and collaborator . And of course, as she always does, she heard a song in the conversation. We started sending ideas for chords/Melodies/Lyrics back and forth, got together over the internet, and a song was born. I sent a rhythm guitar track to drum ace who recorded at , they sent it to me and I added, guitar, bass and vocals as well My sweet love ’s harmony vocals at audio In Buffalo with Marc Werner Hunt being an extraordinary audio engineer. We sent it back to SD, and Tavia added her vocals and produced it between and Rarified again where it was mixed.

It was a truly remote collaboration and it is very special to me because it showed me that Tavia and I can still make music together even though we are on separate coasts. Also because I got to make more music with my sweet and talented Abby. Also because hopefully, in it my friends and family can hear that I love them and know that I am here or there or everywhere with them and giving them all of my love even if I am not physically present or haven’t reached out in a while. Perhaps you can even hear some of yourself or what you’re going through/have gone through in the song. If I know you, I love you. That’s something that lasts and so is this music.

Thank you for listening,
❤️ Matty

This year certainly was a crazy one for me and for Abby. We decided to say goodbye to her hometown and my hometown of over 20 years. We left San Diego in search of a change of scene and a slower pace of life. Packed up our Kia Soul and drove across the country to Lewiston, NY. Where I grew up. It definitely took us a long time to get used to the lifestyle change. We’re still getting used to it.

They grow up so fast. I have been teaching Nick since he was in 4th grade. He’s going off to college at Gonzaga soon. Nick is everything you can ask for in a student. Kind, respectful, and so very enthusiastic. Always reminds me of what a wonder music truly can be. He has accomplished so many things since we have worked together including writing and recording his own 2 act musical!!! I am going to miss him very much. Thankfully his super talented younger brother Alex still hasn’t graduated yet so I still get to stay connected to the family ❤️ Best of luck Nick and thank you for letting me help you on your journey

It truly was a pleasure to have such a great experience with our first recording session in Buffalo. It’s always scary leaving the things you know behind and starting fresh but we found a beautiful room at and an awesome engineer in Marc. No doubt this will be the first of many future collaborations. New song in the works with and my sweet and talented love sang harmonies on the track as well. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon
