Please watch this video produced by James Corbett. It is an excellent presentation regarding the problem with common core. In my own experience, common core has hurt my child's education (I have a 5th grader). The public schools primarily focus on indoctrination - they excel at this and not at teaching. Even though this is anecdotal of a particular case, I will mention that my son could do most of the math nearly perfectly in 3rd and 4th grade for what is covered in 5th grade math. However, after getting "taught" by the teacher at Vista Grande, my son started getting nearly 50% wrong in math. I had to correct these errors in the "teaching" he received from the school's common core curricula. I spent a lot of time retraining him to do the same problems again the way I taught him in 3rd and 4th grade. I explicitly had to reinforce that his first task was to get the problem right (which he could do with the material before school started this year) and not use "common core" methods. My child felt some conflict doing things differently than the way the teacher wanted with common core. He said the teacher wanted him to do the problems the common core way, because his way was too complicated. However, he could get the problems right when I taught him much of the same material in the preceding 2 years. Now he has gone back to my teaching and does not solve the problems using common core (anti)methodology. However, he does go back and fills in the common core methods (after he has solved the problem) to make his teacher happy. His scores have improved again. In this particular case, common core caused a terrible reversion in skill and did not aid in enlightening my child. Common core ends of causing distraction by focusing on elongated processes to solve simple problems.
Outshine Tutoring is not an endorser of common core, but we can help with common core class material. At Outshine Tutoring, we focus on understanding of numbers and operations of numbers to produce conscious awareness of the process of mathematics.
