Her journey, navigating a transfer and dissertation, was powered by vital disability accommodations AND her incredible service dog, Sammy. As Heather puts it, “It literally takes a village!” – a village that also includes her mom, husband, sister, brother-in-law, AND her dedicated dissertation chair, Dr. Nancy Lees.
Her advice for fellow PhD students? “One word at a time, one page at a time.” An inspiring story of accomplishment, fueled by determination and strong support. Congratulations to this amazing NU doctoral grad!

"I am a warrior! I've gone through hell and back during my degree."
Maria S. faced a life-changing health diagnosis while pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity with an emphasis in Information Technology Management. As a first-generation Latina college student with a disability, she didn’t just earn her degree—she stayed on the Dean’s List through it all. Maria’s journey redefines what strength and success look like.
Maria's dedication goes beyond the books. She was President of our Cybersecurity Club, and she emphasizes that "you can't truly secure something until you understand how it works at its core." This foundational knowledge, coupled with her systematic approach to problem-solving, prepared her for the real world—so much so that she's already landed a job in her field.
For Maria, earning her degree meant "working hard for a cause. It represents years of hard work, dedication, and overcoming challenges." Her story is a powerful reminder that with determination and the right support, incredible accomplishments are within reach.
