Dr. Rhonda Harley '22 PhD, Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and Inclusive Excellence at USD Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering joined “At the Edge of it All” to discuss her philosophy behind "cultural capital."

Dr. Harley explains how everyone can use their personal background, their advantages, and even perceived disadvantages, to achieve success in the classroom or workplace.

"Cultural capital really helps people be managers, it helps people understand politics in an office, it helps people build products differently when they're thinking about everybody that might use the product versus just the one community that they know. I mean the more you know and the more you can understand that we are the world and its important to think of anything that you are doing from different types of lenses, a lot of that has to do with how you grew up."

Honoring alumnus Robert J. Keyes ‘62, what a beautiful life and legacy.

Today, we are honoring alumnus Robert J. Keyes ‘62.

Robert J. Keyes was an alumnus of the of USD College for Men. He received a bachelor of business administration and minored in economics and philosophy. He was the captain of USD’s football team during his junior year and went on to play professional football as an offensive halfback with the San Francisco ‘49ers and later with the Oakland Raiders in 1959-1960. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

His career included stints in high school education as a teacher, coach and administrator. After three years with Continental Assurance Company where, in 1966, he was named Agent of the Year, Keyes was appointed Assistant to the Secretary of Business Transportation, San Diegan Gordon Luce.

In 1967, California Governor Ronald Reagan appointed Keyes to Assistant to the Governor for Community Relations as his liaison to minority communities for labor relations, housing, race relations and anti-poverty programs.

At the age of 33, Keyes was appointed to the board of trustees of the University of San Diego. He was the second alumnus of USD College for Men to be appointed to the governing body.

In a telegram to Bishop John Quinn, Gov. Reagan said, “I have just learned of the appointment of Robert Keyes as a member of the University of San Diego Board of Trustees. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you and the members of your board for an outstanding selection.”

Keyes passed on July 8, 1978 of a heart ailment. He was survived by his wife, Marva, and four children.
