Your labs came back normal. Your symptoms didn’t.
This is one of the most common reasons women get dismissed in their forties. A hormone panel gets drawn, the numbers land in range, and the conversation ends there.
Here’s the part that rarely gets explained: perimenopause hormones fluctuate. Estrogen rises and falls week to week, and FSH can read menopausal one week and premenopausal the next. Both results are accurate. Neither one is the whole picture.
For most women over 45, perimenopause is a clinical diagnosis. It’s made from your cycle pattern and your symptoms, not from a blood test. Labs still matter for ruling things out, like thyroid disease, anemia, or pregnancy, and for evaluating early ovarian insufficiency under 40. But they come second.
If you’ve been told everything looks fine and you still don’t feel like yourself, start tracking. Cycle length, sleep, mood, temperature changes. Bring the pattern to your next appointment. It’s harder to dismiss data than a description.
