RIP San Diego State Litho Studio. I heard today "they" never intend to offer the class again. Such a wonderful historied studio with so much potential that will be missed by so many. Thanks for so many great memories. If this is true the SDSU School of Art + Design is loosing a unique resource in their Painting and Printmaking program.

I would like to bring to your attention a new resource for printmaking and fine art print in Central and Eastern Europe, the Celebrating Print Magazine. It is a biannual magazine, published in print, focusing on modern and contemporary print and practice of printmaking in the context of contemporary art. Contributions from art historians, curators and printmaking educators include surveys of trends in printmaking in individual countries, with profiles of artists and reviews of their works through scholarly articles, interviews and project presentations.
The magazine will be presented at CAA 2016 Book & Trade Fair (table #533).
Fine Art Print and Printmaking - Celebrating Print Magazine

It is with much disappointment that I can announce that there will be no lithography (ART 411/511) offered at SDSU next semester. While the decision was made by the SDSU School of Art + Design Coordinator's council in October, I have just been informed this week, after students began to inquire. The reason cited is budget constraints and low course enrollments.
I have been encouraged to promote the studio and have been offered ideas and how to increase enrollment using flyers and social media. However, it is my experience that nothing promotes a discipline more than offering the class on a regular basis or in the case of the current school year – offering it at all. From 2004 – 2008 Walter Cotten and I taught a thriving 2-4 sections a semester and had to turn people away, in 2009 the department cancelled all printmaking due to budget cuts and has only sporadically offered lithography since. This has had a weakening cumulative effect on developing a skilled and experienced student body within the printmaking curriculum.
SDSU has an amazing and unique asset in being able to offer stone lithography and this is about allowing students that pay and choose to attend the School of Art + Design the experience they deserve. I have been told they “are not throwing in the towel yet on Litho,” so if you would like to see lithography offered at SDSU I encourage you to contact Kotaro Nakamura, Director of the School of Art + Design at [email protected].

No Lithography at State this semester? Well, you can always sign up for printmaking at Mesa College or Southwestern college where I'll be teaching this Fall. Hope to see you there!
