"My name is Chris Nell and I grew up in Laguna Beach, California. After graduating from High School in 1975, I traveled extensively overseas in Europe and Asia. I lived in Thailand for 11 years and am fluent in their language. In June 2005, a close friend and former girlfriend of mine, Karen Taylor, took her own life by intentional overdose on medication that was prescribed to her for a terminal tumor in her lung. Due to a confluence of events and circumstances, I was convicted for her murder and have been in prison ever since. Contributing to my wrongful conviction was my extremely bad health and past bad behavior and drug addiction. The first 6 months on my jail stay, I was hospitalized 8 times with acute anemia and twice for pneumocistis pneumonia. Severe lack of oxygen due to hypoxia (an effect of extreme anemia) coupled with arguably the most inept public defender to ever practice law, combined to equal my wrongful conviction for murder. Truth be told, I've done many things that I'm ashamed of. I've hurt people and I'm sincerely sorry for all the hurt I've caused so many good people. I would never, under any circumstances cause her harm. I was trying to take care of her when I contracted p*p pneumonia. The night she died, I was hospitalized in fact. The day before she committed su***de, she confided in her friend Rita (don't know her last name) that she was planning on "checking out" in order to hurt me for not wanting to get back together with her.
