We’re learning more about how the widely implemented test-optional college policies affected admissions. Already, the data bear out what we’ve been telling our students all along: it’s in your best interest to submit a competitive score in the optimal range of your top-choice school.

Here are a handful of examples:

• Emory: Admit rate 17% (with tests) vs. 8.6% (without tests)
• Colgate: 25% (w/tests) vs. 12% (w/o tests)
• Georgia Tech: 22% (w/tests) vs. 10% (w/o tests)
• Vanderbilt: 7.2% (w/tests) vs. 6% (w/o tests)

While “test-optional” may sound enticing, you probably still need to submit your scores – even at test-optional colleges with high acceptance rates. Submitting a score that meets the school’s average target can give you an advantage in an ever more competitive jungle of high-achieving applicants.

To achieve your optimal score, prepping for your ACT/SAT tests is as important as ever. And if you need help prepping, that's where we come in. We have helped hundreds of kids increase their scores on the ACT or SAT. Give us a call to learn more! 858-531-0508

The Parent's Role in Modern Education: Trends to Watch in 2024

2024’s education landscape is evolving rapidly, with technology reshaping learning. Parents now play a crucial role, transitioning from traditional supporters to active participants in their children's education.

1: Parents go digital too
Education has transformed from textbook-centric to digital and interactive. Parents must adapt to these changes, guiding children through a technology-infused learning environment.

2: Parents get more involved
Past roles of parents in education were limited to basic support. Now, they're integral, navigating digital platforms and contributing to children's learning paths.

3: Parents learn new tech
AI and VR are revolutionizing learning, personalizing educational experiences. Parents need to understand these technologies to effectively guide their children.

4: Parents push in-person
With digital learning limiting face-to-face interaction, developing emotional and social skills is crucial. Parents should encourage activities that build these competencies.

5: Parents prep younger
Adaptability and lifelong learning are essential for future success. Parents should foster skills like critical thinking and creativity early on to prepare children for evolving career landscapes.

Parents' roles in modern education are dynamic, requiring adaptation to technology and active participation in children’s academic and personal growth. This involvement ensures children thrive in the future's landscape of possibilities.

The college admissions landscape is evolving with the rise of test-optional policies. Understanding these changes is crucial for parents and students, as the decision to submit or withhold test scores can significantly impact college applications.

Test-optional policies allow students to choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores. They differ from test-flexible and test-blind policies. Test-flexible schools accept other standardized tests, while test-blind schools do not consider test scores at all.

Despite test-optional trends, ACT and SAT scores still impact college admissions and merit-based scholarships. High test scores can differentiate an application in a pool of candidates and are often crucial for competitive programs and substantial financial aid opportunities.

Acceptance rates for test-optional applicants vary. Some institutions report slightly higher acceptance rates for students submitting scores. Case studies show that strong test scores can compensate for average GPAs, whereas strong GPA and extracurriculars can outweigh the absence of test scores.

ACT/SAT preparation is beneficial, keeping college options open and enhancing critical skills. Parents should encourage a balanced study plan that incorporates test prep without overshadowing other academic responsibilities. Consistent practice and focusing on weak areas are key strategies.

Parents and students should evaluate their unique situations when deciding whether to submit test scores. Considerations include the student’s overall profile, the college’s test policy, and the complementary nature of test scores to other application components.

Insights from college admissions advisors can be extremely beneficial and we suggest working with one if you are able to.
