Introducing Ken Keberle, OSHA program instructor. Here he is showcasing his top recommendation for : "I Seem To Be a Verb: Environment and Man's Future" by R. Buckminster Fuller, co-authored with Jerome Agel and Quentin Fiore.

"I Seem to Be a Verb" is a fascinating scrapbook-style compilation of Buckminster Fuller's visionary thoughts on design, architecture, and much more, originally published in 1970.

Big thanks to Ken for sharing his must-read book for National Book Month!

Meet Diana Uyder, Corporate Education and Custom Training Programs Manager for . As a major “Seinfeld” fan, Diana loves the book “Is This Anything?” by Jerry Seinfeld because it makes her laugh out loud at life’s many absurdities.

“I love the organization of this book,” Diana shares. “Rather than using chapters, Seinfeld presents his observational humor in the way it evolved: decade-by-decade. Reading from start to finish isn’t required. Also, I can ‘hear’ Seinfeld’s voice while I read. That alone makes me laugh!”

Diana has worked for Extended Studies for two years. She says the best part of her job is her team of very smart and cool colleagues who, she believes, “genuinely appreciate” her sense of humor.

If you could use a literary laugh, check out “Is This Anything?” by Jerry Seinfeld this . Thanks for sharing your pick, Diana!

Dr. Kelly Lytle Hernández Takes Guests On a Ride Through the World of the Magonistas During Burke Le | Continuing Education | UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies 10/11/2023

UCLA Professor of History, African American Studies, and Urban Planning Dr. Kelly Lytle Hernández, a leading expert on race, immigration, and mass incarceration, recently visited UC San Diego to discuss the Magonistas, the migrant rebels who put a jolt on the 1910 Mexican Revolution from the United States, and whose revolt, she argued, is a critical part of U.S. history.

The free lecture sparked conversation about the profound impact the Magonistas’ radicalism and revolt have had on modern American life. The lecture continued on to topics from Lytle Hernandez’s acclaimed book “Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and Revolution in the Borderlands,” which details the comeabout of the Magonistas and their quest to escape México’s dictatorship set by then-President Porfirio Díaz.

The event was supported by the Eugene M. Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society, which sponsors public lectures where scholars, theologians, and religious practitioners address critical issues on the relationship between religion and society and on the religious dimensions of being human.

In our first staff feature for , we are spotlighting Project Management Program Instructor Ray Frohnhoefer.

Ray is the co-author of his book pick, “Project Cost Management: Principles, Tools, Techniques, and Best Practices for Project Finance,” which covers global principles and best practices related to project cost and financing and is used by higher education institutions across the country.

He shared, “No organization has unlimited financial resources, so project cost management is relevant to all projects, regardless of the management methods used. Rather than focus on budgets alone, this book covers financial concepts for project selection, estimation, payments, financing, and control throughout the project lifecycle. We've made every effort to keep the concepts clear for aspiring, new, and accidental project managers while covering project financial topics relevant to all project managers.”

Ray says he likes the class diversity in years of project management experience and industries within the program because it allows students to learn from each other, not just from the lectures and assignments. Ray has been with Extended Studies for over 19 years!

A Catalyst for Economic, Intellectual & Cultural Growth

How We Serve: UC San Diego Extension harnesses the power of education to transform lives. Our unique educational formats support lifelong learning and meet the evolving needs of our students, businesses and the larger community.

Mission & Values: The mission of UC San Diego Extension is to serve the critical lifelong learning and skill development needs of individuals, organizations and the community. We do this through continuing education, certificate and degree-related programs; community initiatives that support economic and social development; and a wide array of public-service lectures, forums and special events delivered both on and off campus and through print, internet, radio and television.

Our History: In 1966, in a small wooden building situated among a grove of eucalyptus trees, UC San Diego Extension first opened its doors. Under the guidance of Dr. Martin Chamberlain, a former Peace Corps director in Africa, Extension quickly established a reputation for being a reliable source of knowledge taught by national experts. The first educational programs reflected the social turbulence of the times, with courses in radical rhetoric and international affairs. Other offerings included a statewide lecture series on integrated circuits for engineers and performances by prominent jazz musicians like John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk.

With an entrepreneurial mindset, Chamberlain's staff assured Extension's viability by providing instruction focused on personal growth and career advancement, with courses in accounting, real estate, nursing and women’s studies. Chamberlain also helped create a lecture series presented by Latino and African American community leaders and launched an English as a Second Language program for international students. “What makes a good administration is looking at what’s going on in society and determining how you can contribute to that,” Chamberlain said.
