The important things to know and remember in homeschooling:

1. You are in charge. You set the schedule, you pick the curriculum (and change it when needed), you decide what your goals are. Not the state. Not the neighbors. Not the school district. You.

2. It does not take 12 years to educate a child. Just because public schools have forced enough busy activities into each day does not mean they are educational or necessary. Take a common-sense look at what you’re doing, and cross the wasted time off your schedule.

3. You are a family, not a school. Be a family first, and integrate your school work into your life (not the other way around). Children are humans, not just students. Give them childhood memories, not just school memories.

I don’t know how parents do their job without the wisdom and comfort of the Scriptures.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally, without reproach, and it will be given to him.” -James 1:5

Though we can go through our entire lives without knowing God, there is no real peace, no foundation for wisdom, no assurance of salvation, and no hope for the future.

As a parent, I need these assurances and hope, for myself and for my children. The privilege of raising children cones with joy and laughter, but it also comes with grief and pain and helplessness.

It is a comfort to look to Jesus, and to point our children to Him.

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits...” - James 3:17

Dear moms and dads, no matter how old your children are or what you are going through, God is able to give you wisdom for decisions, strength in the tough times, hope for the future, and comfort in the sad times.

“Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don't need to search any further for security.” — Elisabeth Elliot

I homeschooled my children in the late 80’s early 90’s when homeschooling was not as popular as it is today. I was questioned by family and friends as well as church members who were concerned my children would not be properly socialized or educated.  I doubted myself many times because I barely graduated from high school. As we proceeded, taking one day at a time, we were able to continue until “graduation do us part”.
I am proud to say, “my children are normal, productive citizens, who made it out alive!”

We are now in the month of October and as you know the days are going to fly by quickly and before we know it the holidays are upon us. This doesn’t mean we need to be stressed out, quit the opposite! This is the time to get outside and go on walks or hikes, backyard bonfires and s’mores, game nights, apple picking, baking, crafts and so much more! Start new adventures with our children of all ages. Although we live in sunny San Diego we still have the honor to experience the changing of the seasons. Take advantage of all the beauty God has blessed us with.

…and fathers as well as grandparents ❤️

No one can pour into your children the way you can. There are days when the struggle to homeschool is real and there are days when learning together is so sweet that you can't imagine school any other way. Embrace the time you have with your children. They are so worth it.

Remember to start your day with the One who knows best!

Homeschooling will require sacrifice, come with trials, and cost some money but the reward is eternally worth it.

“Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.”

You can do it as you trust in Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to lead your decisions.
