San Diego State University Dance Program

In this academic program, dance is personal, physical, social, and political. At the heart of this rigorous study is a love of dancing.

The Dance Program at San Diego State University is a laboratory for exploration, integration, and conscious action: an ecosystem where emerging artists practice, connect, create, and reflect with depth and permeability. We prepare developing artists for dynamic, self-authored, and innovative careers in dance with a curriculum that fosters collaboration and mindful leadership. Our approach to dance cultivates dynamic relationships informed by and influential to the world around us.

We welcome you all to attend “Deviate” this years Senior Capstone concert on:

Thursday, April 28th, Friday, April 29th, and Saturday, April 30th @ 7:30PM

Come see work directed by our seniors in collaboration with their casts!

We can’t wait to see you there ❤️

'Deviate' consists of four dances that were developed by seniors Julz Fernandez, Mariah Polster, Robbie Taylor ( ), and Lev Savittieri through their Capstone experience. Each collaborated with their cast, the faculty, and one another to create what’s in store for you. Euphoria, nostalgia, and the liminal space between the fierce and the feminine—Are you willing to loosen your grip on your current state of mind?

The University Dance Company presents “Every Other” directed by SDSU Dance faculty Joseph Alter and Jess Humphrey.

Each dance was created through the collaborative curation of material that was generated from embodied experiments in the studio, and both contain space for the dancers to shape the dance live, moment-to-moment, during the performance.

For "Above All, Don't Look Down", the cast drew inspiration from the question: "What happens if we work with what is present, available, and alive?"

"Just. Keep. Going." is a choreography that honors the dancers bodies' responses to the complexity of all that's happening in the world. The dancemakers' were supported, steered, and softened by drawings created by incarcerated participants’ for the Prison Arts Collective* in response to Wallace Stevens’s poem, “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird".

We invite you to open your mind as you join us so you can these dances to heart.

Stay tuned to our Stories for more ticket links in the coming week!

SDSU Dance Program’s Performance Forum presents:
A l s o B e a u t y

Friday, December 3, 7:30 pm

Saturday, December 4, 7:30 pm

ENS 200 | Studio Theater

An ensemble cast shares and shapes the space in Also Beauty, opening their hearts and minds for the audience and the dance as it unfolds. This evening of choreography was created by questioning what dance is and what it can do, both for those who do it and those who view it. Also Beauty is a setup where "high" and "low" art can mingle. It is a dance that means more than one thing and invites you to question and expand your definition of beauty.

Heads-up: Performances may contain partial nudity

Our Story

The Division of Dance at SDSU celebrates dance that is inspired by our shared engagement, experiences, and explorations within our ever-changing world. We honor our lineages as we embrace unfamiliar territory. Our program is a laboratory for embodiment, integration, and conscious action: an ecosystem where emerging artists practice, relate, manifest, and articulate with depth and permeability. In our academic and practical approach, dance is personal, physical, social, and political. These elements combine to create an environment where dance education can be transformational. Our curriculum fosters collaboration and mindful leadership, preparing young artists for dynamic, self-authored careers in dance and other fields. At the heart of this rigorous and radical program is a love of dancing.
