On Wednesday October 7th at 4:30 PM PST, Anthony Jerry, PhD, will explore how the concept of citizenship allows for a richer understanding of blackness in Mexico, the relationship of the black subject in the construction of mestizaje, and the manner in which a perceived Afro culture serves as the basis for the Mexican state’s control over Black identities.

Anthony studies the relationships between race and citizenship and investigates the influence that regional discourses of race and racism have on citizenship practices and overall access to citizenship. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Garcia Robles Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, and a University of California Chancellor's Post-doctoral Fellowship. He has worked in the Costa Chica Region in Mexico for over 10 years. His work also explores the impacts of issues of migration, immigration, racisms, and citizenship on first generation youth and youth of color in the U.S./Mexico border.

A couple days ago a SDSU Filipinx student organization, AB Samahan, experienced racist harassment during a Zoom meeting. LASSO stands in solidarity with AB Samahan in denouncing the xenophobia and racism they, and many AAPI, have encountered throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. Hate and bigotry must be denounced wherever we see it--on SDSU campus and in our virtual congregations.

Our third Women’s History Month profile focuses on the Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Carmen Yulín Cruz. Elected to office in 2013, Mayor Cruz became the third woman to hold the mayoral office in San Juan. She gained international notoriety following Hurricane Maria in 2017. After openly criticizing the president’s lack of emergency response in Puerto Rico, she was labeled “crazed and incompetent” by the president. Since 2017, Mayor Cruz has fought to ensure the citizens of Puerto Rico receive the emergency aid promised to them by Congress. She is currently running for governor of Puerto Rico while also continuing to advocate for victims of natural disasters.
