Here’s a simple one-beat drum fill to add to your playing this week.

It starts on beat 4, so it’s short, manageable and a great way to start getting comfortable moving around the drum set.

Start slowly, count along and focus on playing it cleanly. Once it feels comfortable, try adding it to some of the basic beats you already know.

Looking for something fun to work on this weekend?
This beginner drum beat takes a simple groove and adds just one off-beat bass drum note - enough to make it a little more challenging and a lot of fun to play.

Start slowly, keep everything relaxed, and focus on getting that off-beat note in the right place. Once it starts to feel comfortable, gradually build your confidence and see if you can play it along to some music.

Choosing your first drum set can feel like another hurdle when you’re getting started.

Acoustic drums give you the experience of playing the real thing, but if noise at home is a concern, electronic drums can be a great option. You can control the volume, use headphones and still enjoy playing along to your favorite songs.

The important thing is finding the setup that works for you and your circumstances.

Buying a shell pack? You’re also going to need the hardware to turn it into a complete, playable drum set.

That typically means a hi-hat stand, snare stand, bass drum pedal and cymbal stands - but don’t assume a hardware pack includes everything you need.

A drum throne is often sold separately, and even something as basic as a pair of drumsticks might not be included.

The key is simple: check exactly what you’re getting before you buy.

Buying a shell pack is only part of putting together your first acoustic drum set.

You’ll also need cymbals and hardware - and it’s important to understand exactly what’s included before you buy.

A starter cymbal pack will typically give you hi-hats, a crash and a ride, while your hardware needs to include the appropriate stands and a bass drum pedal.

It might sound like a lot, but once you understand the terminology, buying your first kit becomes much easier.

There have never been more ways to learn the drums.
You can find a local teacher, learn from YouTube, take online lessons, follow a structured course - or use a combination of them.

The important thing is finding an approach that gives you the structure you need without getting overwhelmed by things you simply don’t need to know yet.

Think you’re too busy to learn the drums?

Most of my students are adult hobbyists with jobs, families and plenty of other demands on their time.

The good news is, you don’t need to practice like someone preparing for a professional career. Focus on a few key fundamentals - basic beats, simple fills and learning how to put them together to play songs.

You might be surprised by what you can achieve with the time you already have.

Learning the drums might start with simply wanting to play along to your favorite songs at home - and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But you never know where it might lead.

I’ve seen students in their 70s go on to play in bands, join music programs and meet some great people along the way.
It’s another reason why age shouldn’t stop you from getting started.
