Learning Equality We are bridging the global digital divide by bringing the online learning revolution offline.

Learning Equality is committed to enabling every person in the world to achieve a quality basic education, through supporting the creation and distribution of open educational resources, and facilitating their use inside and outside of classrooms around the world. Through this work, we aim to build a new, open, and fundamentally human-centered educational model, to develop skills that empower learners to fulfill their potential, in order to promote human flourishing.

🗽 We’re heading to New York City next week to join global leaders and peers for events tied to the 81st UN General Assembly!

Our Co-Executive Directors, Navya Akkinepally and Lauren Lichtman, along with our Director of Philanthropy, Sumaira Mian, will be making connections and talking all things equitable education 📚 — the needs, the solutions, and how collaboration can bring us closer to a world where no learner or educator is left behind 🌍

If you’re around, we’d love to connect! 👋

"Learning does not have to stop because they do not have access to internet." 🎥

Meet Deborah Namugenyi, Asante Africa Foundation 's Uganda Country Manager.

Before, most lessons were teacher-led — students listened and copied.

Now, teachers are running discussions. Group work. One-on-one support for students who need it.

Learners are more confident. More excited about numeracy and literacy.

A slow or missing internet connection shouldn't decide what a classroom can teach.

Every learner deserves an education built around them, wherever they are. 🌍

🎉 Big news: Learning Equality is a finalist forSolve - MIT 's 10th Anniversary Global Challenge!

We were selected from 1,000 applicants worldwide.

Our work: hands-on, project-based STEM learning and teacher coaching for middle grades classrooms with no internet access.

It's powered by Kolibri, our free digital learning platform that brings quality education to communities without reliable connectivity.

Middle grades are one of the sector's biggest blind spots. Most proven education technology stops at grade 5. We're building for what comes next.

Thank you to our team and everyone who has supported us along the way. 🌍

The final 10 winners will be announced September 22 at Solve Challenge Finals.

🎉 Big news: we've been selected to receive a grant from the K-12 AI Infrastructure Program!

With this support, we're building open benchmarks for science misconception identification in grades 6-12: a rigorous evaluation set that any edtech product can run their model against to find out whether it can reliably detect what students actually misunderstand in science.

More to come as the work progresses.

Thank you to Digital Promise , Learning Data Insights, DrivenData , Massive Data Institute at Georgetown University, and Catalyst @ Penn GSE for this opportunity.

Built with teachers at YIDA Youth Initiative - Youth Initiative for Development in Africa in Uganda. Now in Kolibri 0.19.4.

Thank you, YIDA — this feature exists because of you.

"The only thing that refugees would have as a property is their brain. If your brain is not educated, you will still remain poor." -James Gihoma

Saturday was World Refugee Day.

Learning Equality is honored to partner with refugee-led organizations like YIDA Youth Initiative - Youth Initiative for Development in Africa , based in Kyaka II refugee settlement in Uganda. James Gihoma founded YIDA after living as a refugee himself from the age of three. Today, he and his team run two schools serving children who need more than just a classroom — they need a reason to stay in one.

On World Refugee Day and every day, we stand in solidarity with James, with the YIDA team, and with the more than 100 million displaced people around the world.

"Learning Equality is not abstract. It shows up in a classroom in Pakistan where a deaf child is using their hands to tell you that it really matters." 🤲

That's Sumaira Mian, Director of Philanthropy at Learning Equality.

In 2025, Sumaira visited Deaf Reach schools in Pakistan — and watched students sign along with Kolibri in a classroom where access to education is far from guaranteed.

That moment brought everything home. Watch to hear her story. ▶️

"All this time I was sitting in my house in India, staring at a screen, hoping this work was impacting learners — but when you see it in person, you just realize." 🌍

That's Revanth Voothaluru, Director of Global Implementations at Learning Equality.

45 minutes down a muddy road in Uganda. No internet. A classroom in a refugee settlement that changed everything. Watch to hear his story. ▶️

Third in a four-part series featuring some of the people behind our work. More to come. 🎬
