A few individual portraits from the studio lately.

I like how a single portrait can make you wonder about the person you’re looking at. You don’t necessarily know their story, but somehow the photograph gives you a glimpse of them.

There’s something about that simplicity that I’ve always appreciated in portraiture.

September wrap.

Looking back at this month, I had so many people come into the studio together, couples, longtime friends, families, parents with their babies, and people celebrating different moments in their lives.

I always enjoy hearing a little bit about what brings people in and why they decided to make a tintype together. Thank you to everyone who visited the studio this month, trusted me with their portraits, shared my work, or continues to support what I do.

October is already looking busy, with a few events and pop-ups coming up, including October 11, Halloween, and then Día de los Mu***os in November. I’ll be sharing more information about those soon.

August was a busy month at the studio, and looking back at the photos, I realized just how many couples came through my doors.

Some were celebrating engagements, recent weddings, reunions and anniversaries, and some simply wanted to sit together in front of the camera and experience making a tintype.

I also had people visit from Nevada, Virginia, Orange County, LA and other places outside of San Diego. It’s always a little surprising to hear that someone planned a visit to my studio as part of their trip here. There are so many things you can choose to do while visiting San Diego, so knowing that making a tintype with me was on someone’s list really means a lot.

Thank you to everyone who came through the studio in August, local or visiting, and trusted me to make a portrait of you. I’m very grateful to get to do this work and to document a small part of so many different stories.

One of my favorite parts about this work is seeing people come back year after year.

I first photographed Tania when she was pregnant, and over the years I’ve had the chance to keep creating portraits for her and June and family as they grow together. It honestly means a lot to me to become a small part of people’s family history and memory through these photographs.

Watching kids grow, seeing families return, remembering past sessions, it’s one of the most meaningful parts of having this studio.

Thank you Tanya for trusting me all these years to create these portraits for your family. It’s always special to see you both come back to the studio.

This year for Nowruz, my wife made her own traditional Kurdish dress just in time to celebrate with her family surrounded by Kurdish food and tradition.

A few days after, we came to the studio and made this portrait. It’s something I try to do every year.

The first two images are from 2026, the last two from 2024.

We’re lucky to have this small multicultural family, being able to celebrate and carry these traditions together.
