Myth: If you separated from the military years ago, it’s too late to file a VA disability claim.

That’s not necessarily true.

There isn’t a general rule that says you lose the ability to file a VA disability claim simply because years have passed since you left service. What matters is whether you can establish the requirements for service connection and support your claim with relevant evidence.

Your service history, medical records, current diagnosis, and other evidence may all play a role in showing the connection between your condition and your military service.

So if you’ve been putting off learning about your VA claim because you think “it’s been too long,” don’t make that assumption without looking at your specific situation.

A VA claim can be frustrating, especially when the process doesn’t go the way you expected.

A denial, confusing paperwork, or a long process can make you question whether it’s worth continuing. But before giving up, take a closer look at what happened and what options may be available for your situation.

Education matters because understanding your decision, your evidence, and the next steps can help you make a more informed choice about how to move forward.

Got a VA decision you disagree with?

VA Form 20-0995 may be an option worth understanding.

This form is used to request a Supplemental Claim, which allows you to ask the VA to review a previous decision when you have new and relevant evidence.

That evidence could include new medical records, treatment information, a personal statement, or other evidence that could support your claim.

One important detail: if you want to preserve the effective date associated with the decision you’re challenging, the Supplemental Claim generally needs to be filed within one year of the VA decision date.

The key is understanding why you’re filing and what new and relevant evidence supports the review.

A denial doesn’t necessarily mean the conversation is over. Sometimes, the next step is understanding which review option fits your situation.

A birthday is more than celebrating an organization. It’s recognizing the people who built its legacy through service.

On the United States Air Force Birthday, we recognize the Airmen who have served throughout generations and the veterans who continue to carry that experience into their lives after military service.

Behind every mission are people who made sacrifices, families who supported them, and communities that felt the impact of their service. Their dedication helped shape the Air Force into the force it is today.

Today, we honor those who have served, those currently wearing the uniform, and the families who have been part of that journey.

**Happy Birthday, U.S. Air Force. Thank you to every Airman and veteran who has answered the call.**

It’s not just about how bad the headache feels.

Under Diagnostic Code 8100, the VA looks at the frequency, severity, and impact of migraine attacks. Ratings can range from 0% to 50%, with prostrating attacks playing an important role in the 10%, 30%, and 50% criteria.

A prostrating migraine is severe enough to interfere with normal activities, forcing you to stop what you’re doing, lie down, or withdraw from daily activities.

That’s why documenting your migraines matters. Track how often they occur, how long they last, your symptoms, and how they affect work and daily life.

The more clearly your records describe the actual impact of your migraines, the easier it is to understand the severity of your condition.

Migraines aren’t rated based on pain alone.

When the VA evaluates migraines, the frequency and severity of your attacks matter, especially whether they are prostrating.

A prostrating migraine can stop you from normal activities, forcing you to lie down, isolate yourself, or miss work.

Under Diagnostic Code 8100, prostrating attacks are key to 10%, 30%, and 50% ratings. Attacks averaging once a month can meet the 30% criteria, while very frequent, completely prostrating and prolonged attacks can meet 50%.

That’s why documenting how often migraines occur, how long they last, your symptoms, and their impact on work and daily life matters.

If your migraines force you to shut everything down, make sure that impact is being accurately documented.

Patriot Day is a time to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and recognize the people who stepped forward when our country needed them most.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day, including civilians, firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, and other heroes who put themselves in harm’s way.

For the veteran community, September 11 also became a turning point. Many service members answered the call in the years that followed, and countless veterans carried the impact of that day throughout their military service and beyond.

Today, we remember those we lost, recognize the first responders and everyday people who helped others during one of our nation's darkest moments, and honor the veterans and military families who sacrificed in the years that followed.

We remember. We honor. We never forget.🫡

Neck pain can be more than just an ache. If it’s connected to your military service, it may qualify for VA disability compensation. The VA looks at your symptoms, medical evidence, range of motion, and how the condition affects your daily life.

Understanding what the VA considers can make it easier to know what evidence matters for your claim. Knowing what to document can make a difference when presenting your condition. Education starts with understanding how your condition is evaluated.

Labor Day is a time to recognize the people who keep showing up, putting in the work, and making a difference.

For many veterans, that commitment began during military service. The long hours, discipline, teamwork, and responsibility developed in uniform often continue into civilian life.

After service, veterans take on new challenges by building careers, starting businesses, supporting their families, pursuing education, and serving their communities in different ways. That transition can require just as much determination as the work they did while serving.

This Labor Day, take a moment to recognize the veterans who continue to contribute, work hard, and make an impact long after their time in uniform.

Filing a VA claim can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure what evidence matters or where to start.

A lot of Veterans struggle with understanding VA forms, connecting their condition to their service, and knowing what information the VA needs to properly consider a claim.

That’s where education matters. I work with Veterans to break down the claims process, understand what they’re submitting, and make more informed decisions about their next steps.

You don’t have to figure it all out by guessing. Book a free 30-minute call, and let’s talk about what you’re trying to accomplish with your VA claim.
