🎃 BE PART OF THE MAGIC: ADOPT A BOOTH! 👻🍂

This year, our annual fall event is getting a major makeover into the Sandburg Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24—and our amazing families are the ones making the fun happen! 🐯✨

Hosting a booth is flexible and easy:
🍬 Keep it simple: Just bring yourself and hand out candy (provided by the Sandburg Foundation)!
🎨 Get creative: Pick a family theme (Padres, favorite cartoons, video games, spooky fun—whatever you dream up!).
🎯 Add a game: Want even more action? Check out a carnival game directly from our Foundation game library to run at your table!

🎟️ BIG UPDATE: No tickets will be sold this year! Every Sandburg Tiger gets 1 FREE punchcard to visit every booth. That means the more families who host, the more fun stops there are for all of our kids!

Sunday Message -- 9/27/2026

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!

As we practice Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind, we encourage our families to think about the goal we all share each morning and afternoon: getting every child to and from school safely. We can reach that goal when we plan ahead, leave a few extra minutes for arrival and dismissal, use designated drop-off and pick-up areas, follow traffic signs and staff directions, and remain patient with one another. When we “begin with the end in mind,” we remember that arriving a minute or two faster is never more important than keeping our students, families, and staff safe. Thank you for working together to make safety our destination every day!

SDUSD School Choice Enrollment Period
If you moved out of the Sandburg boundaries during this school year, are a TK student who is out of Sandburg boundaries and not currently CHOICEed in, or have friends that want to join our amazing Sandburg family, please read the information below. For the groups listed above, if you would like your student to continue here at Sandburg you MUST complete a CHOICE application. The CHOICE program allows students to enroll at their non-neighborhood school. The CHOICE priority window will be open from Monday, October 5th through Sunday November 15, 2026 for the 27-28 school year. We would enjoy having a continued partnership in educating your students here at Sandburg. San Diego Unified School District will sponsor two Parents as Partners Choice Workshops moderated by the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options Office.

The presentation will:
• Provide an overview of the Choice Process
• Explain what and when the Priority Window is (October 5th thru November 15th)
• Provide answers to frequently asked questions by parents and give attendees the opportunity to ask questions.

They will present this topic on Wednesday October 14th at 5:30pm to 6:30pm and Thursday, October 15, 2026 at 11:30am to 12:30pm.

SD City El Nino Webpage
As San Diego prepares for the upcoming rainy season and the potential impacts of El Niño, the City of San Diego has shared some preparedness information and resources.

Resources available now on the City's El Niño webpage (link in comments) includes:
· Information on preparing your family and home;
· Signing up for emergency alerts;
· Understanding your flood risk; and other steps residents can take before storms begin

The City’s Office of Emergency Services is hosting a virtual preparedness webinar on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. OES will walk through the resources available to residents, how to prepare for an emergency, and how local partners can help make sure this information reaches the people they represent.

Core Academy
We had to cancel our first Core Academy that was scheduled this past Saturday due to lack of enrollment. We do have additional dates coming up this fall and we are excited to offer this opportunity to students and families. Any student who has been absent from school has the opportunity to attend Core Academy and get credit for one of those absences. Getting credit removes the absence from the student’s record and increases funding for San Diego Unified. Check out this link with more information: 26-27 Core Academy Information Sheet. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Robyn at [email protected]. Please complete the Core Academy Permission slip (link in comments) if you are interested in having your Tiger attend a future core academy. Only students who have absences to make up will generate funds to support Core Academy. Sandburg’s Career Day is coming up, and we’re looking for parents and community members with interesting, unique, or unexpected careers to share with our 4th and 5th graders!
On the morning of Monday, November 9, students will get the chance to hear firsthand about different careers, ask questions, and discover possibilities they may have never considered.
Think your job would be fun for kids to learn about? We’d love to have you! No matter how unique or unconventional your career may be, we want to hear from you!

🧑‍🔬🧪 SCIENCE OLYMPIAD - 3rd - 5th GRADES
The San Diego County regional Science Olympiad will be happening Saturday, February 6th. We are excited to once again have Sandburg teams entering the competition, sponsored by the Foundation.

Science Olympiad is an optional after school opportunity for interested 3rd- 5th graders. A sign up link for interested students will be coming out in the near future.

👻🎃FALL FESTIVAL - BE PART OF THE MAGIC!🎃👻Saturday 10/24
We’re excited to share that Fall Carnival is getting a BIG makeover! This year, it’s becoming the Sandburg Fall Festival—and the biggest change is that our families are the ones making the fun happen! In the past, our carnival was run mostly by high school volunteers. This year, Sandburg families can adopt a booth and help create the experience for our students!

And don’t worry—you can keep it super simple! Families can sign up to host a table and simply hand out candy provided by the Sandburg Foundation. Or…go BIG and get creative! Decorate your table with a fun theme—maybe a K-Pop Demon Hunters tent, a Padres baseball theme, or anything your family dreams up!
Want even more fun? Families can also check out a carnival game from our game library to run at their booth!

And here’s another BIG change: There will be NO tickets sold this year! 🎉
Instead, every Sandburg Tiger will receive one FREE punchcard. That punchcard lets them visit every festival table once—FREE! Want your child to play or visit booths more than once? Want to have siblings who don’t attend participate too? Have friends and family from the community attending? You can purchase additional punchcards.

So this year, more families hosting booths means more fun for everyone!

Principal Message - 9/20/22026

We loved seeing so many families at our Family Friday Reading activity and our Sandburg Foundation Back to School Dinner and BINGO and Pop-Up Book Fair. Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers for putting on such a fun event for our families! I am constantly reminded of the amazing Sandburg community we are all so lucky to be a part of! Our next family Friday activity will be on Friday October 16th and more information will come out as the date approaches.

Did you know that between September 15th and October 15th, SDUSD celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month, also known as Latinx Heritage Month, is observed from September 15 through October 15 and recognizes the culture, history, struggle, contributions, and achievements of Hispanic and Latinx Americans.

The San Diego Unified School District officially recognizes and celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month (see link in comments) each year, and encourages teachers, other staff members, students, and the community to use this opportunity to honor the contributions of the Latinx population through student led activities and inclusive curriculum.

Students are encouraged to participate in the district's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by taking part in our Latinx Heritage Art Contest, joining our Latinx student panel via Zoom, or submitting a story about your experience and identity as a Hispanic/Latinx person. Check it out!

Leaders of Tomorrow Before School Care

Leaders of Tomorrow is exploring the possibility of offering a before-school morning program at Sandburg Elementary, and we would love to hear from families who may be interested! The proposed program would operate Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM until the school bell rings. Students would be taken to breakfast, and TK–1st grade students would be walked directly to their classrooms.

Tuition cost would be as follows: one-time $50 registration fee and $50 per week. A 10% discount would be available for SDUSD employees, military families, and siblings.

At this time, we are simply gathering interest to determine whether there is enough family need to move forward with the program. Completing the survey does not commit you to enrollment and does not guarantee that the program will open. If your family may be interested, please complete the short interest form below:

Fall I-Ready Assessment Reports

All 1st-5th graders take the I-Ready Math assessment in the Fall, Winter and Spring. All 3rd-5th graders take the I-Ready ELA assessment also in the Fall, Winter and Spring. This week assessment reports were sent home by the district. The I-Ready assessment is based on what students need to know at the end of their current grade. At this time of the year, students who fall in the green band are above grade level. This means that on the assessment, they showed that they already know some of the standards for the current grade level. Students who fell in the yellow band, showed that they are one grade level below their current grade level. This is where we expect students to be at the start of their current grade level on the Fall assessment. We do not expect them to already know the grade level standards.Students who fell in the red band, showed on the assessment that they were 2-3 grade levels below. Teachers will be discussing any areas of concerns with parents during October and November at parent teacher conferences.
