The founders of RISE San Diego are former San Diego City Council President Tony Young and community and nonprofit leader Dwayne Crenshaw. Both are native sons of southeastern San Diego with vast experience in urban communities, government, nonprofit management and public service. The success of RISE is built on our leadership’s long-term commitment to social justice and equity, deep knowledge of the community and proven ability to engage with residents, nonprofits, business and civic leaders.

We are deeply honored to announce dr. grace shinhae jun as the recipient of the inaugural Viet Mai Artivism Award at this Monday’s Inclusive Leadership in Action Awards!

This special award holds profound meaning for our community. It was created in loving memory of Viet Mai — a brilliant poet, dedicated activist, former RISE fellow, and dear friend whose art and advocacy touched so many lives before his passing last year. The Viet Mai Artivism Award honors those who carry forward his legacy of using creative expression as a catalyst for justice, healing, and social change.

dr. grace shinhae jun embodies this spirit through her work as a scholar, choreographer, educator, and movement artist, constantly centering Hip Hop culture, community resilience, and art as activism.

The Anthony M. Medina People’s Champion Award recognizes an advocate whose words and actions bring meaningful, lasting change to underserved and marginalized communities across San Diego.
This award is named in honor and memory of the late Anthony M. Medina—a 2018 RISE Urban Leadership Fellow and 2019 ILIA Award recipient who dedicated his life to community organizing, social justice, and equitable legal access. Anthony leaves behind an enduring legacy of advocacy, empathy, and fearless community leadership.
