Since it was founded in 1981, CASA has been an open, inclusive regional organization devoted to promoting the field of American Studies, particularly in California. We hold an annual conference which welcomes graduate students, undergraduates, K-12 educators, and community members as well as professors of American Studies. Membership in the American Studies Association is not required of attendees at our conference.

We are starting to plan our one day CASA conference for Spring of 2022!

We are hoping to be able to hold a hybrid meeting, with both virtual attendance and in person (at CSUF) gathering as an option on Friday, April 22nd 2022 - save the date!

Congratulations to our 2019 Jackie Donath Prize winner for the best paper delivered at our annual meeting by a graduate student: John Gove (San Diego State University) for his paper, “Activism on the DL: The Gay Liberation Front at San Diego State.” Bravo, too, to the runner-up, Tim Trevor (Long Beach State University) for his paper, “Fighting Dogs and American Identity: The Cultural Evolution of the Pit Bull Terrier, 1870-1920.” Honorable mention to Quinn Anex-Ries (University of Southern California), “Detached Vaginas: The Racial Effects/Affects of the Fleshlight” and Isaac Rooks (University of Southern California), “‘We Wouldn’t Stand a Chance’: A Revisionist Ecocritical Assessment of Hitchcock’s The Birds.”

We are happy to announce that the winner of the 2017 CASA Jackie Donath Paper Prize is Najwa Mayer (Yale University) for her paper “Securing Punk(s): Building a (Feminist) Taqwacore Culture of Dissent in the War on Terror.” We received many quality submissions this year and thank all of those who shared their work with us at our meeting in Long Beach last month.
