It’s hard to believe this little samurai is all grown up and heading off to college.

For the past 13 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Nina grow from a young karate student into an incredibly talented, confident, and kind young woman. She has been the kind of student every instructor hopes for—dedicated, hardworking, humble, and always willing to give her best.

Nina is a true example of what long-term commitment to martial arts can do for a child. But what makes me most proud isn’t just the highly skilled martial artist she has become. She is also a gifted musician and artist, an outstanding student, and, most importantly, a genuinely kind and thoughtful person.

Watching students grow up is one of the greatest rewards of being a martial arts instructor, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of Nina’s journey.

Good luck at UCLA, Nina. I know you’re going to crush it in neuroscience, and I have no doubt that the same dedication, discipline, and perseverance you’ve shown in the dojo will take you wherever you want to go in life

We are all incredibly proud of you.

The spinning hook kick is powerful and dangerous, but since it can be anticipated and easily evaded, practice it with balance and control to always land in a strong fighting stance, ready to defend or follow up with additional attacks.

🥋 Everyone should learn how to fall.

Judo doesn’t just teach you how to throw someone—it teaches you something even more valuable: how to get thrown, hit the ground safely, and get right back up.

Whether it’s on the mat, in another sport, or an unexpected fall in everyday life, knowing how to fall is a skill that can last a lifetime.

Learn to throw. Learn to fall. Learn Judo.

When working mitts, it’s always a good idea to add some defense after a combination, then follow up with another attack. Royce working his 1, 2, shoulder roll and elbow block, then firing back with a left hook, cross, left hook and body kick combo. Notice how Royce steps to his left on the last left hook before throwing the body kick. Opponents often don’t see these subtle angle changesI if you are throwing a punch at the same time as you step. #実践空手

It’s been a big couple of weeks for Dutch. Earning his Karate brown belt and Judo yellow belt in back-to-back weeks. One of the greatest rewards of teaching martial arts is watching a child grow and develop the life skills that come with it. While most students train for only a year or two, those like Dutch who stick with it build the confidence, discipline, perseverance, and resilience that benefit them throughout their lives.

Dutch came to our dojo 10 years ago as a kind, considerate, gentle child. That hasn’t changed, but that same gentle kid now walks with confidence and a swagger that comes from knowing he’s put in the work, overcome challenges, and developed the strength and skill to fight at a high level.

That kind of confidence isn’t given. It’s earned—one class, one challenge, and one year at a time.

I couldn’t be more proud of the young man and well-rounded martial artist Dutch has become. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him. #実践空手

The spinning back kick is a great technique to stop an opponent who's trying to walk you down. If you walk straight into this kick, it feels like getting hit by a car. #実践空手

The body kick is a great tool to get your opponent to drop their hands and leave the face open. #実践空手
