The Honorable Maureen F. Hallahan, the current Presiding Judge of the San Diego Superior Court, will be recognized for her extraordinary achievements in the legal community. She was appointed to the bench in 2007 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Judge Hallahan has received numerous legal awards and honors, most notably the Family Law Judge of the Year for the State Bar of California, the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Judge of the year Award and the San Diego Family Law Bar Association Lifetime Service Award.

Congratulations to Rising Star Recent Alumni Award Honoree Alexandra Preece Barlow who will be celebrated at next Thursday's Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony & Luncheon!

Alexandra is a partner in the Complex Litigation and Advisement Group of Morrison Foerster, where she focuses on complex product liability matters in state and federal courts involving medical devices, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, automobiles, and artificial intelligence.

She is an active in the San Diego legal community as a member of several legal organizations, including Lawyer’s Club and Wallace Inn of Court.

Today, we are highlighting Distinguished Alumni Award honoree Frederick Schenk who will be celebrated at the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony & Luncheon on Thursday, November 21.

Fred is a partner, head of mass torts and plaintiff trial lawyer at Casey Gerry Schenk Francavilla, Blatt & Penfield, LLP, where he has practiced for over 41 years. He has been recognized by the American Association for Justice for his extensive pro bono work through their Trial Lawyers Care® program — an initiative to encourage, recognize, and organize trial lawyers who contribute to their communities through volunteer and charitable activities that serve the public good.

Now, for the second time, Fred is serving as president of the 22nd District Agricultural Association’s Board of Directors which manages and operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds and San Diego County Fair on behalf of the State of California.

USD School of Law - Children's Advocacy Institute’s (CAI) Fellmeth-Peterson Associate Professor in Child Rights Jessica Heldman appeared on NBC 7 San Diego in a story titled, “Advocates hope new state Assembly bill ensures foster kids can keep government money.” Heldman discusses the State’s practice of taking federal Social Security benefits meant for foster youth and the bill, AB 2906 (Bryan), CAI sponsored to try and stop the practice.

The Center for Employment and Labor Policy and USD Law is so excited to be hosting the 19th Annual Colloquium on Scholarship in Employment and Labor Law (COSELL), in conjunction with California Western School of Law on September 13-14.

This Colloquium gives both emerging and establishing labor and employment scholars an opportunity to gather with colleagues to present their work to an expert audience.

What a wonderful week welcoming the entering class of Fall 2024 to the USD campus! Orientation kicked off with the Oath of Professionalism delivered by the Honorable Judy S. Bae '02 (JD) and a faculty model debate by Professors of Law Michael Ramsey and David McGowan. First year students took a full tour of the campus, participated in "1L essentials" sessions, and mixed and mingled with faculty and staff at a community luncheon. Classes start on Monday!

USD School of Law and Professor Orly Lobel invite you to attend the 19th Annual Colloquium on Scholarship in Employment and Labor Law (COSELL), which will be co-hosted by USD Law and California Western School of Law (CWSL), Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14.

A full day of panels is planned with continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner at USD on Sept. 13. A half day of panels with continental breakfast and lunch is planned at CWSL on Sept. 14. CLE credit may be earned according to the schedule which we will send closer to the conference date.
