Burke Lectureship Presents a Film Screening of A TREE OF LIFE with Special Guest, Producer Susan Margolin
October 9, 2024
6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts

The Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society invites you to a screening of A Tree of Life, followed by a discussion with independent film producer Susan Margolin and UC San Diego Jewish Studies Director Allan Havis. The event will explore the themes of community building, interfaith healing, and efforts to end hateful violence. Co-Sponsored by UC San Diego's Jewish Studies Program, the event aims to foster dialogue on combating prejudice and strengthening interfaith connections in today's increasingly polarized world.

A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting (2022) is a documentary that examines the horrific 2018 antisemitic massacre of the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 worshippers were murdered. The film highlights the profound ways in which interfaith communities rallied around the Jewish community in the wake of this tragedy, attending memorials, raising funds, and launching advocacy efforts to combat gun violence. As hate crimes against religious, racial, and LGBTQ+ groups rise across the U.S., the film serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for interfaith cooperation to inspire change and heal divisions.
