Recording can document the truth. It can also cross a line.

New SDSU MALAS student Natalie Gonzalez (and recent SDSU Department of English & Comparative Literature alumna) brings awareness about the impact of recording vulnerable populations without consent, through her award-winning research on Meta Glasses and voyeurism. Her work earned second place at the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs annual conference this summer.

Challenge technology. Question its impact. Engage with the issues shaping our world.

What can a QR code tell us about the future of food?

For CAL senior Zora Heneghan, that question has become a research project. Working with geography professor Keavy McFadden, Heneghan is studying how the shift to QR codes on food packaging could change what consumers know about nutrition, sourcing, allergens, food safety — and the food system itself.

Blending political science, food studies and technology, she’s asking bigger questions about transparency, access and who gets to shape the information we see.

Because sometimes research starts with a simple question: Why?
