Wow today was a crazy day, so many boxes!
So much packing we’ve had to do over the last couple weeks and we got it all done. Today was our last day in this space. And we are super excited to be moving into our new gallery when we are back from break in January but it’s a little bittersweet as we have had so many good memories in this space.
Now time to make some more next year starting with the Alumni Exhibition opening at the end of January. @ Mesa College Art Gallery

Catherine Opie Icehouses and Surfers
We’ve made it to the last week of classes and are ready for our winter holiday. San Diego’s “White Christmases” are more like “White Sand Beach Christmases” but we all get out into the landscape in our own way to spend those few short weeks before classes are back in session. Catherine Opie looks to temporary communities in her “Surfers” (2003) and “Ice Houses” (2001) series. For the “Ice Houses” works she traveled to Nothern Minnesota to photograph the shanties that move onto frozen lakes in the winter time. The “Surfer” photos were taken in Malibu, California.
Her use of negative space and a consistently placed horizon line shows her subjects being consumed by the landscape. What are you up to this winter? Surf or Snow?

Art History Wednesday
This piece by Lakota artist Wanbli Koyake is done in the traditional pictographic style of the Planes Indians. The paper background comes from the Peabody Museum, an institution known for it’s large collection of ethographic artifacts. The artist requested this list of cultural terms, many of them inappropriate and innaccurate, and has corrected it with the names Native tribes use to refer to themselves and eachother. His riders wear traditional outfits and are identified by their traditional names as they cross this sheet of paper overtaking the teachers, academics and scientist carrying books related to the study of Native peoples.
Koyake attended art school including graduate school but seperated from the western model of academia for personal reasons. He now considers art making a part of his existance as he learns to live through Lakol Wicohan kin, the Lifeway of the Friendly People.
This reflexive critique of history and of who is in charge of classifying and recording histories exposes issues of bias that are built into many institutions including art museums. Efforts to decolonize and reasses these relationships are a process of ongoing learning that is crucial as we move forward into a more just and equal society.
