What happens when you have 99 million voters, 3,400+ candidates, 881 open seats for judicial positions, and just 8 months to put on an election? A farce? Corruption? Democratic backsliding? You be the judge… but according to our expert panel on Mexico’s 2025 judicial election, 87% of eligible voters didn’t show up, 10+% of voters spoiled their ballots, and 100% of the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación candidates listed on the ruling party’s “cheat sheets” won their elections. So grateful to Stephanie Brewer (Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA)), José Antonio Caballero Juárez (IIJ-Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), Laura Calderon (USD), Michael Mandig (Consultants in Oral Advocacy), Alejandra Ríos Cázares (World Justice Project), Judge Victor Torres (Superior Court of California), Juan Vega Gómez (Estación Noroeste de Investigación y Docencia-IIJ-Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) for their invaluable insights.
