Here's the deal, Singers. Most of us have adhd. That includes ppl who do not currently sing but have a deep desire to do so. In our studio, this is 70-80% of everyone. The idea that you are failing as a music student because you don't practice a lot between sessions is kinda bigoted against us ND ppl.

For ppl without ADHD who can control their focus, certainly practicing a bunch between lessons is a good way to maximize the value of your lessons. But for us ADHDers, we are not always able to do this. The solution to this isn't to drop out because you can't bring yourself to practice as much as you imagine you should, but to just keep coming to class. You'll certainly learn your instrument. It won't be as fast as it is for those who put in an hour a day, but if you view it as you are "disabled" and need accommodation, and that accommodation is that you won't judge yourself for not being able to control your attention, you'll develope the self-compassion you need to proceed.

CliffNotes: If you're in lessons and practicing, you make the most progress per week. If you're in sessions, but not getting in a bunch of practice, you'll make the second most progress per week. If you quit sessions altogether you'll make 0 progress per week. Extrapolate that to 3 years in lessons and you can see sticking with it is the most important indicator of progress.

PS I don't practice much between sessions most weeks

Covid Related Update

We've been seeing news of Omicron spreading and have given our instructors the choice of switching to online sessions only.

For clients (and instructors) who’ve gotten their last vaccine dose more than 6 months ago, we are requiring a booster shot starting 1/15/22. We are also encouraging them to get the booster from a manufacturer other than the manufacturer of their initial vaccinations.

Further, we have a Covid Cancellation policy where if the person feels under the weather at all, they can cancel - even if it’s kinda close in - and reuse their credit.

We are ordering singers’ masks from the Broadway Project to hand out to students (and our instructors).

Our new space at 797 8th Ave has larger rooms (11x14 I believe) that will have splash screens. Laura in NYC is moving there come 1/1/22.

We want everyone to both BE safe and FEEL safe. Covid is a pretty stressful, anxiety-inducing experience. The fact that everyone is going through it does not mean it’s less life-altering or stressful (which is sometimes overlooked).

New In Person Instructor Dr Han!!!
https://singing-lessons-nyc.eleonorengland.com/Home/dr-joseph-han/

Ellie here to tell you about our 1st associate teacher in San Diego – Dr Joseph Han. It had been 2 years of searching for a San Diego associate teacher when I met Dr Joseph (2 years!!!!). I wanted to find someone who was good enough for our NYC clients but was located in San Diego and Dr J had a promising resume and a great personality.

The thing is every teacher who I hire has to teach 3 of our existing clients an “audition” session and then we have the students review the teacher. I couldn’t get a third client for the spot so I took it myself and – I was shocked to find I would later say to people that it was one of my maybe top 3 voice lessons that I’ve taken in my lifetime. I thought maybe I was imagining it but the other two people who took the audition sessions both rated him on our 10 question survey as being 8-10 out of ten possible stars for every aspect of their sessions w Dr Joseph. Listening to the sessions, the before/after contrast was unbelievable.

In fact, one of them sang so much better at the end that I barely recognized him singing! The student in question sometimes struggles with “singing in tune” and while Dr J was being a super sweetheart to the student, when they were done with the session, he was mainly right in tune – and Dr J didn’t work on pitch but just solved some technical problems and that did the trick. I never heard that student sound so good.

Dr Joseph’s style can be described as being “persistent”. And there was no arguing with the results!

So if you’re on the ground in San Diego and want an in-person lesson – or if you’re elsewhere and just want a very persistent teacher who gets results (plus speaks Korean – Hello !) I really recommend him highly, not just for beginners but also for pro voices. And remember that we have a money-back guarantee if you didn’t dig your 1st lesson. I might even take a few more from Dr Joseph is how good he is.

Dr J teaches in Normal Heights (92116) and La Jolla proper (92037 near Girard/Torrey Pines Rd) starting Dec 2021 —- plus online via Zoom. 50 minute lessons with him are $100 in person or online. Dr Joseph is fully vaxxed and ready to roll for fully vaxxed clients — or Zoom lessons if you’re unvaxxed or outside of San Diego!

David’s got a fabulous group class that meets weekly with his Songwriting/Music Production Workshop! You get a real sense of community with this one — you’ll hear and share your projects amongst your fellow songwriters and producers! Your classmates and David will give you feedback on what your piece (the lyrics, flow, etc.) made them feel and how to take what already works with the song and run with it.

Those familiar with Discord will be happy to learn that the class has its own server where you can chat, post and share pieces what you’re working on, and laugh at music memes :D
