San Diego Refugee Tutoring

The (almost) end of the spring semester means one final push🗣️😤 and a little encouragement with our go-to saying: “LET’S FINISH STRONG!!” 💪📚

This past Saturday, our students took on their assessments with focus and determination. 🧘🏻‍♀️

It was a chance to celebrate their progress and identify areas we’ll continue building on📖 We know sitting and testing for long periods isn’t easy, which makes their effort even more impressive!👏🏻We’re incredibly proud of each and every student for showing up and giving it their all💛🙂‍↕️

And a huge thank you to our amazing tutors who volunteered their time, your support truly means the world to us and our community!! ❤️

Huge turnout last week as we welcomed 40+ new faces to SDRT!!🤗🎉 We loved meeting all of you and are excited to have you join our community💛

We’re currently on week 2 of spring break, so enjoy the time off and we’ll see everyone back next Tuesday and Thursday , April 7 and 9! Welcome aboard!🫡🙌

Hard work ➡️ Earned adventures 🥾🍃

After weeks of hard work in tutoring sessions and assessments, our kiddos deserved a day outside🌞

We took them on a HOT hike at Lake Poway, because what better way to introduce hiking than a little sweating? 😅 Lunch, games, s’mores, and a GREAT hike made for a perfect day.

So proud of these kids! 🙌🏼

First Two Weeks of Tutoring in 2026✅

After the break, our kids came back excited and motivated to learn and ready to continue building their skills🙂‍↕️ For example, look at this student, he was able to complete the phonics word-building all by himself!!! ✨👏🏻

Also, our students have been working hard in Freckle both at tutoring and at home📖📑 Freckle is a program that gives them personalized focus skills in reading and math based on their assessment results.

Over Winter Break, the students who logged the most minutes in Freckle earned Target gift cards, and everyone who reached at least 100 minutes was rewarded! 🏆 They were SO excited, and we couldn’t be prouder🫶🏻

Shoutout to two of our top prize earners for their dedication and hard work, well deserved! And don’t worry… the Freckle Challenge returns over Spring Break 😉💐🎯

As we look back on an incredible year in 2025, we’re beyond grateful for the growth, the learning, and all of you who made it possible❤️🫶🏻

We hope you enjoyed the holidays with your loved ones and are feeling excited for all that 2026 has in store.💪🏼 SDRT will continue to be a refuge for learning, belonging, and hope✨🩵

We closed out 2025 at 98% of our $70K year-end goal!!! This is a huge milestone for SDRT and you, as this is was our biggest Giving Tuesday and end-of-year campaign ever!! 🙌🥳 Thank you for continuing to believe in SDRT💫

We had the BEST surprise during Thursday’s tutoring session! 🌙✨🔭

Space educator Mat Kaplan from , YESS!! the same organization led by !!😱 stopped by with two of his high-powered telescopes. And even cooler? He’s the father-in-law of one of our amazing elementary tutors🤫

This all started when one tutor noticed his student light up while reading a space-themed book…and the rest is history. 🚀

Our students (and tutors…and staff🙂‍↕️) were blown away by the views of the Moon. Mat said he loved sharing the experience just as much as they loved seeing it!😊🫶🏻 We’re so grateful for the creativity and generosity of our volunteers and community.

And as Bill Nye says: “Science rules!” 💛😎
