San Diego Refugee Tutoring

Celebrating World Refugee Day this weekend! Join us Saturday 6/22 from 11am-2pm at Cuyamaca Community College for a free multicultural community event!

Also join us Friday 6/21 from 1-4pm at the Mingei International Museum to support ’s powerful “Our Voice, Our Power” exhibition showcasing oral histories and performances preserving the stories of refugees from Burma.

We hope to see you at one or both of these events!

And, that’s a wrap for the 2023-24 school year, folks. We ended with a bang 💥 last week and let our kids play with the (usually banned) sports balls 🏀🏐 🏈 We had fun, gave out summer reading material, took photos, and said goodbye to one another after a fantastic year of so much growth. We will miss each other greatly this summer.

Have no fear. We’ll be back Sat., August 10 with field games and back to school gear at our Annual Back to School Event so save the date and join us! Have a restful summer, everyone!

Sugar rush meets bike bliss at our epic Bike Day! 🚲🍭 200+ students & volunteers united for two-wheeled adventures, cotton candy clouds, and so much joy. From bike riding to connecting with tutors, it celebrated the belonging we create for our 130+ student families. As one student said, “I will always have a place here.”

You wouldn’t believe this TK student came into tutoring in tears in September! She danced her way in last night! And had to show us her amazing tricks too! We will all be dancing into our last week of tutoring next week! Please join us! We have more students than ever.

It is that time of year again for our April Fundraising Campaign! This year, we have a goal of adding 10 corporate sponsors during the month of April. We absolutely cannot do this without your help.

The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round, Round and Round,” as we rolled out of City Heights early  Saturday morning. Within minutes, we heard kids shouting and pointing at mountains, the Kensington ones, on our way down Fairmount Avenue headed to the 8 freeway. The energy on that bus was palpable. Once the “Safari Park” sign came into view, all fifty began chanting, “Sa-far-ee Park! Sa-far-ee Park! Sa-far-ee Park!”

Had a great night of our reading log launch last Tuesday—the kids are pumped! Thanks, Gracie and Natasha, for leading art night as well. Our kids look forward to taking a break from academics and being creative! 🎨

Look what’s in the works! It’s time to encourage our kids to start using their SDRT reading logs 5 nights a week. Let’s get our kids reading at home! 📚

Puzzles, books and games made up our last half hour of tutoring last night! All were engaged no matter what they were doing. Thank you to those of you who showed up to support our kids’ learning.

We really need more Thursday tutors so RSVP now for our last 3 weeks before spring break!

After bowling and pizza today, we got a tour of San Diego State University from our very own SDRT student who is about to graduate in May with a Psychology degree at SDSU. She’s also a SDRT Jodi Maroney Scholarship recipient! We are so proud of her and thankful for her today!
