📸 National School Picture Day feels like the perfect day to celebrate something we know well at Aseltine: memories.

We may not have a vintage staff photo or an old class picture to share today, but if you’ve been part of Aseltine, you know that some of the best memories never made it in front of a camera.

They’re in the classroom conversations that made us laugh.
They’re in the friendships that started at school and lasted long after.
They’re in the teachers & aides who made a difference.
They’re in the traditions, the milestones, the celebrations, and all those ordinary school days that somehow become the ones we remember most.

For generations, Aseltine has been more than a school. It has been a community — a place where people grow, learn, connect, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

So today, instead of sharing just one picture, we’re celebrating the countless moments and people who have made Aseltine what it is.

💙 Here’s to the memories that never needed a camera.

🎨✨ Keep Kids Creative Week! ✨🎨

Creativity isn’t just something kids do—it’s a way of thinking, exploring, problem-solving, and discovering who they are.

Artist Bruce Van Patter created in 2003 to encourage opportunities for children to be creative and reduce the distractions that get in the way of a creative lifestyle. At Aseltine, we believe creativity belongs in every part of a child’s learning experience. 💡

That’s why we intentionally create opportunities for students to make, imagine, experiment, and think creatively throughout the day:

🎨 Visual Arts — exploring creativity through color, design, materials, and self-expression.

🍳 Culinary Arts — turning ingredients and ideas into something delicious while building confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

🎶 Music — discovering rhythm, sound, performance, and the creative expression that music inspires.

🔬 Science & Problem Solving — giving students opportunities to think outside the box, experiment, ask questions, and creatively solve challenges.

📚 Creativity Across the Curriculum — incorporating art and creative thinking into core subjects like math and science, helping students see that learning doesn’t have to fit into just one box.

At Aseltine, we want kids to know there isn’t always just one right way to think, create, or solve a problem. We nurture their curiosity and give them space to explore ideas, take creative risks, and discover what they can do.

Because when we keep kids creative, we keep them curious. 💛

Here’s to raising thinkers, makers, artists, innovators, and problem-solvers!

💛✨ National Just Because Day! 🎉

We were so excited to welcome our students back to Aseltine School this week! There’s something special about starting a new school year—reconnecting with familiar faces, building new relationships, and creating opportunities for our students to grow, learn, and feel a sense of belonging. 💫

Today, on National Just Because Day, we’re celebrating the little things we can do simply because they bring joy. Give someone a compliment. Make a new friend. Share a smile. Try something new. Do something kind for someone else—just because!

We know how one small, unexpected act of kindness or encouragement can brighten someone’s day. 💛 That’s why we focus so much of our work on building meaningful connections with our students. When people feel seen, valued, and accepted, they are more willing to take healthy risks, try new things, and treat others with the same compassion and respect.

As we begin another year together, let’s look for those opportunities to spread a little joy, offer encouragement, and make someone’s day better—just because! 🌈

What will you do just because? 💛

🍣👩‍🍳 Summer Culinary Program at Aseltine School!

to our summer session with a culinary program that's about so much more than making delicious food—it’s an opportunity for students to build valuable, real-world skills in a fun and hands-on environment.

As students cook together, they practice following directions, measuring and sequencing, working as a team, trying new things, building independence, and taking pride in what they create. Every recipe is a chance to learn—and taste!—something new! 💛

Here are our students getting creative in the kitchen while making sushi with Spam. 🍣✨ Who knew learning could be this delicious?

💙 August is Month! 💙

At Aseltine School, we know that every child experiences the world in their own unique way. Many of our students are on the autism spectrum and/or have behavioral support needs, and movement can be a powerful tool for promoting emotional regulation, reducing stress, building confidence, and strengthening family connections.

Physical activity doesn't have to mean organized sports or long workouts. Sometimes the most meaningful moments come from meeting your child where they are and joining them in activities they enjoy.

Here are a few ideas to get moving together:
🌳 Take a quiet nature walk and explore the sights and sounds around you.
🎵 Dance to your child's favorite songs.
⚽ Roll, toss, or kick a ball back and forth.
🚲 Ride bikes or scooters in a safe, familiar place.
🫧 Blow bubbles, jump, stretch, or create an obstacle course at home.
💙 Follow your child's lead—movement should be fun, engaging, and free from pressure.

For many children, physical activity can support self-regulation, improve focus, encourage communication, and provide positive opportunities for connection. Most importantly, it reminds our children that they are loved, accepted, and celebrated just as they are.

At Aseltine School, we celebrate every achievement—whether it's trying a new activity, taking one more lap, or simply enjoying time together as a family. Every step, every smile, and every success matters.

📸 We'd love to see how your family stays active! Share your favorite movement activity or photo in the comments and help inspire our Aseltine School community.

Together, we're building confidence, resilience, healthy habits, and meaningful connections—one movement at a time. 💙

Today, Aseltine School proudly celebrates our annual Ice Cream Day in honor of our beloved former teacher, Jon "Blazeman" Blais with tasty treats from San Diego Water Ice.

Jon's life was a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the belief that obstacles are meant to be overcome. As a child, he faced learning disabilities that made school challenging. Rather than allowing those challenges to define him, he became a teacher, mentor, and passionate advocate for children facing similar struggles—showing them that their potential is far greater than any obstacle.

When Jon was diagnosed with ALS, he once again refused to let adversity write his story. He continued to pursue the activities that brought him joy and made him feel alive. In one of his most inspiring accomplishments, Jon completed an Ironman triathlon after his diagnosis. By the time he reached the finish line, his body was so exhausted that he rolled across it—the only way he could finish. But finish he did.

That was Jon. He never stopped moving forward.

As we enjoy Ice Cream Day together, we remember not only the incredible teacher Jon was, but the extraordinary example he set for all of us.

This is your day to get up, show up, and move past the obstacles in your life by moving your own personal mountains. Whether your challenge is big or small, take one more step. Keep going. Keep believing. Keep moving forward.

Thank you, Jon, for reminding us that courage isn't about having an easy path—it's about choosing to move forward, no matter what.

💙 We celebrate your life, your legacy, and the inspiration you continue to provide to our students, staff, families, and community.

Our students are serving up more than great food—they're building skills, confidence, and character wherever they go! 👨‍🍳✨

This summer, our Culinary Arts Program enjoyed some memorable field trips that showcased just how amazing our students are.

During a visit to Black Bear Diner, our group of 18 students and staff received an unexpected compliment when a fellow diner approached our table to praise our students' outstanding restaurant etiquette. Their respect, patience, and kindness didn't go unnoticed, and we couldn't have been prouder.

On another outing to the Little Italy Farmers Market, several vendors recognized our Culinary Arts students from last year's visit. They shared how impressed they were by our students and spoke highly of Aseltine School, remembering their positive attitudes, curiosity, and respectful interactions.

These moments are a reminder that our Culinary Arts Program is about so much more than cooking. Our students are learning valuable life skills, practicing professionalism, and making a lasting impression in the community wherever they go.

We are incredibly proud of our Culinary Arts students for representing Aseltine School with excellence. Keep up the amazing work! 💙🍽️

✨ National Anti-Boredom Month is basically our theme all year long! ✨

At Aseltine School, students learn by doing—whether that's cheering at a baseball game ⚾, exploring community fairs 🎡, discovering Old Town 🏘️, visiting Julian 🥧, or enjoying new adventures together.

We're proud to make learning engaging, hands-on, and connected to our community. Every outing is a chance to build confidence, practice life skills, make memories, and have FUN!

We believe some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. Because learning is even better when you get out and explore. 💙
