Student: Yessenia Diaz, 5th Year Architecture

Project: Black Arts & Cultural Center

Location: Encanto, California

Located in San Diego, Encanto has a population of 52,000 residents. It's a highly dense suburban neighborhood with lots of schools and parks. Encanto was settled in 1891 when Abraha, Klauber built a country club, one of the oldest and largest in the 8 communities of Encanto. One of his daughters named it “enchanted” in Spanish. This is an Adaptive Reuse project of the existing Boys and Girls Club located in the city of Encanto. Our goal is to transition to the existing Black Arts & Cultural Center for the community. After redefining the site and concluding our program, it switched to finalizing the building design process. Safety, Connection, and Activation goals influenced the ultimate design.

Student: Paulina Lira, 4th Year Interior Architecture and Design

Instructor: Professor John McMahon

Project: Cresso

Due to the current problems with the American lifestyle and housing crisis, a serious need for accessible, healthier alternatives has emerged. Cresso is a self-sufficient building designed to make a healthy lifestyle more approachable and convenient for its residents.

From greenhouses filled with fresh produce and 24-hour grocery stores to amenities that support exercise and meditation, Cresso aims to reduce outside stress by providing a unique space filled with nature and opportunities for the community to come together.

The building’s name, Cresso, translates to “thrive” from its Latin origin, symbolizing its purpose of helping residents thrive. The design incorporates the four elements—Air, Fire, Water, and Earth—to create biophilic patterns throughout the building.

Cresso is a building that feeds the mind, body, and soul through green spaces, social gatherings, and places of relaxation.

How can we make housing more affordable while creating places where people actually feel connected?

NewSchool and the UC San Diego Design Lab are bringing students together for the Housing Design-a-thon, a two-week collaborative challenge exploring new approaches to co-living in high-cost cities like San Diego.

Work alongside housing advocates, architects, policy leaders, and community members to turn ideas into potential solutions.

Student: Hailee Strach, 4th year Interior Architecture and Design

Instructor: Professor John McMahon

Project: Flora Women’s Medicial Facility

Location: Downtown San Diego

Flora is a modern birthing center designed as a comfortable mix of home and hospital. It offers four floors of birthing suites, each equipped with a queen- or king-sized bed, birthing tub, changing tables, bassinets, a spacious bathroom and shower, and extraordinary views of downtown San Diego. Nurses and midwives are positioned near every room to assist with delivery, with two emergency C-section rooms located on each floor. The goal of Flora Birthing Suites is to allow pregnant women to have full control over their labor and birth by providing several options and areas for delivery within each room.

Flora also provides a residency program for low-risk applicants who require only minor assistance. The program includes mental health assistance through therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, personalized treatment plans, and support for independence and socialization. Flora provides residents with time to get back on track, avoid burnout, begin recovering from trauma, treat anxiety and depression, or simply get away from the world when it becomes too much.

Reimagining the heart of San Diego.

During San Diego Design Week, NewSchool faculty member Bohan Lang led the Civic Center Redevelopment Workshop, bringing participants together to explore ideas for the future of Downtown San Diego’s Civic Center.

Through collaborative discussion, design thinking, and real-time visualization, the workshop gave participants a chance to contribute their own perspectives and see how community ideas can begin to shape public space.

A meaningful exchange of ideas, perspectives, and possibilities for the future of our city.

NewSchool faculty member Tiziana d’Agostino brought "The Psychology of Places: Designing Spaces for Performance and Inclusivity" to San Diego Design Week, exploring how the environments we create can influence the way we think, feel, connect, and interact.

Hosted at NewSchool as part of Designing Our Spaces, the conversation offered a closer look at the human experience behind the spaces we design and the impact those spaces can have on everyday life.
