It's Friday y'all 🎊 Did you know that neurodiversity is not a new concept 🤔

The neurodiversity movement emerged in the late 80s and 90s, growing out of the broader 1960s and 1970s disability rights movement.

It shifted the paradigm from a purely medical model (which viewed neurological differences as deficits to be cured) to a social model (which views differences like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia as natural human variations).

Some of the early leaders in the neurodiversity movement include:

• Harvey Blume
• Jim Sinclair

It's Friday y'all 🎉 Did you know that your child's present levels really drives 🚗 the IEP?

The Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) section is the heartbeat of the IEP and the foundation on which everything else is built.

PLAAFP describes:
• How the student is performing now in all areas, including academics, behavior, social-emotional, communication, etc.
• How the disability impacts their ability to access their education and make progress
• What supports are currently working
• and more...

A well-written PLAAFP ensures that goals-->accommodations-->services-->hours are all aligned to provide a free and appropriate public education to your student, related to their unique profile 💙♾️

Happy Wondering Wednesday 👋🏽 Have you ever wondered about your rights in the IEP process 🤔 Well that's our topic this month. Today, let's shine a light on PWNs...

A Prior Written Notice (PWN) can be a powerful tool 📃 for sure. When a district/school agrees to or refuses to make specific changes to your child's IEP, they should provide you with a written document that explains their reasoning "within a reasonable time". This document is a PWN. The specific areas include adjustments to eligibility, placement, or assessment.

Refer to ⚖️:
• Section 300.503 of Title 34 of federal law IDEA
• 34 C.F.R. Sec. 300.503; Cal. Ed. Code Sec. 56500.4

Example: If the team denies a request to change a child's school placement after reviewing the assessment data, they should provide a ✍️ written explanation of their refusal. Sometimes, just by asking for a PWN, teams may change their mind 🫱🏻‍🫲🏽
