The Storyteller. As a teacher in a Waldorf School you become a storyteller for the students from the first day you meet the children in your care. A true storyteller is not the center of attention but rather shapes the story in relation to the listeners, so that storytelling becomes a conversation, guided by the teacher’s inner work and the teacher’s growing understanding of the children who sit around him/her/them.

Each subject taught becomes a story/conversation as the teacher strives to make a heartfelt connection to the children as individuals, as well as always honoring the great archetypes that live in the curriculum we bring to them.

In our workshops, we will seek to answer the overriding question that drives Waldorf Education: What does it mean to be a human being? Our starting point must be to grasp that there is no one, no simple answer to this question, but we have wonderful guidance in the picture of human development that has arisen from the work of Rudolf Steiner.

The wisdom that lives in fairy tales, legends, mythology, the world of nature, the universe of arithmetic—this we will explore through the two weeks devoted to grades one (San Diego) and two (Los Angeles). In these workshops we will daily engage our own abilities to move, to speak, to think, to sing, to discover the whole picture from which all the parts can be derived. I look forward to the conversations that we can cultivate in these days.

About our teacher, Dennis Demanett

I started my teaching career in England, and took my first class there, from 1976-1984. I did my teacher training there also, from 1974-76. Honolulu was my next stop, where I taught from 1984-1989. Then we moved to Pine Hill in NH, where we stayed 8 years. We have been in Pasadena since 97. Presently I am retired from teaching, but still work mentoring teachers. I will be teaching 2 courses at WISC this summer a week each on grades 1 and 2. Also, I am at work on painting. I am a new member of MAFA, Monrovia Association of Fine Arts and will have a show, with three other local artists, beginning in April. Gardening takes up the rest of my time, enjoying the work but also the broccoli, lettuce, kale and so on!

Join us for a warm and delightful in-person workshop next month!

transforming the lives of children through adult education

The San Diego Campus of The Waldorf Institute of Southern California came about because a group of parents at the Waldorf School in San Diego wanted to have an opportunity for Waldorf teacher education in San Diego and not have to drive to Los Angeles. They invited the Los Angeles directors to a meeting and Jacqueline Develle, (current co-director) happened to attend the meeting and before we knew it a small satellite part-time program began.

Classes were small and we met in a variety of places. Gradually, the program grew into a full program and we graduated our first class of students in 2005.

Our program is now housed at the Waldorf School of San Diego lower campus and we run a part-time teacher certification program. We believe strongly in transforming the lives of children through adult education.

Become the teacher that inspires the next generation of young people--we hold frequent Open Houses. Check our website or reach out and schedule a visit to see what it is all about.
