Session #1 of SDYS is officially underway! This week our Barnard student scientists dove into the dynamic world of the biofouling habitat, the complex biological community that attaches and survives on submerged surfaces at the water line.

Students are getting hands-on with local marine animals, identifying, diverse, polychaete worms, crabs, brittle sea stars, limpets, sea spiders and even a juvenile California two spot octopus hidden within the habitat. Observing and working with these species up close not only connects students with anatomy and adaptations, but also fosters place based learning and environmental stewardship.
