Since retiring from Poway High, Al Torretto’s classroom has just gotten bigger! He volunteers regularly as a docent at Cabrillo National Monument.

Yesterday was the end of an era! In Mr. Torretto's words, "I am sad to tell you that my friend and coworker of 39 years, "Rodney," the Burmese Python died last night. He was a gift from one of my football players in 1980. At that time, he was 12 inches long. Over the years he grew to a gentle giant of 14 feet long. For 38 years, Rodney roamed my classroom, the halls, and lawn of PHS. he educated, entertained, and inspired thousands of students from preschool to high school. I hope as he crawls through "The Great Rainforest in the Sky" that he finds a beautiful female Burmese python that he can spend some time with. He will be missed!"

As a family, we know that Rodney was a World-Class snake. He nearly doubled the average life span of a Burmese Python, which is typically 20-25 years. The World Record for a Burmese Python was 43 years, which was recorded in 2009. Before that, the World Record was 33 years! In addition to that, I don't know that any other snake has been so well known to an entire community. We know that he will be remembered by many!

Our family is so humbled by the generosity of Tony Olivera for starting this and so many others who have donated. He will be overwhelmed with gratitude when he finds out about this. And yes, Alaska really will be a trip of a lifetime for him.

He truly is an amazing teacher, coach, and all-around human being.
