The Maritime Institute is the leader in maritime training offering 150+ USCG & Navy approved courses. Serving CA, HI and WA.
Training Resources Limited was founded in 1998 by Capt. Ray Addicott (USN Ret) and LCDR Ray Gillip (USN Ret) to provide superior maritime training for civilian and military mariners. The company was incorporated in 2001 as Training Resources Limited, a Nevada Corporation (“TRL”). Through the years, TRL grew to become one of the largest maritime training centers on the West Coast, and invested heav
ily in training equipment, instructors and facilities to provide superior, realistic maritime training. The backbone of the training program is a significant investment in simulation equipment, including a Full Bridge simulator, engine room simulator, high voltage simulator, fire fighting simulator, ARPA/ECDIS simulators, small weapons simulation and a full scale life boat demonstrator. In 2017, the company moved to a new, state-of-the-art, 18,000 square foot training facility that includes 15 classrooms dedicated to subjects in deck, engineering, small arms and life/safety curriculum. Maritime Institute was founded in 1976 and grew to become the go-to center for Captain’s License certification in California, though the company offered a wide variety of courses for mariners of all backgrounds. Maritime Institute instructors became renowned in U.S. Navy special warfare circles for their superior training programs for small vessel operators, a key training need for Small Boat Teams, SEALS, and other special operations personnel. The company partnered with International Yacht Training (IYT) to provide Master of Yachts certification for those seeking to charter vessels outside of the United States. In addition to it’s San Diego training facilities and classroom in Alameda, California, the company provided exportable training in remote locations throughout California. In 2018, Training Resources acquired Maritime Institute and merged the organizations together. Today, Training Resources Limited Maritime Institute (“TRLMI”) offers over 80 U.S. Coast Guard approved courses in San Diego and Alameda and continues to provide exportable training throughout California and select East Coast locations. Our customers include Government organizations such as the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command and NOAA; Civilian ship operators such as Maersk Shipping, Disney Cruise Lines, and Foss Maritime; Merchant Mariner Unions such as Sailor’s Union of the Pacific (SUP) and Marine Fireman’s Union (MFOW), and thousands of independent mariners each year. The company provides training to over 4000 mariners annually, in topics that cover every aspect of shipboard safety and operation.

💰️ The Cost of Reactive Hiring... 💰️
Most workforce challenges don't happen overnight.
They accumulate quietly.
✔️ One retirement.
✔️ One resignation.
✔️ One delayed promotion.
✔️ One expired credential.
Eventually, organizations react instead of planning ahead.
Reactive hiring often costs far more than proactive workforce development. The strongest organizations don't wait until positions become vacant. They continuously develop the next generation.
🙋♀️ How does your organization balance immediate hiring needs with long-term workforce planning?
📢 Share one lesson learned...

Growth isn't just about adding vessels or winning contracts. It's about preparing people before opportunity arrives.
🙋 How does your organization prepare for growth?
🙋♂️ What has worked well for your organization?

Every organization wants growth.
- New contracts.
- Additional vessels.
- More customers.
But growth exposes weaknesses just as quickly as it creates opportunities.
The organizations that grow successfully usually have one thing in common:
- They prepare their workforce before expansion begins.
Ask yourself:
• Do we have enough qualified leaders?
• Can we promote from within?
• Are our training plans aligned with future business goals?
Growth shouldn't surprise your workforce.
It should be something they're already prepared to support.
🙋♀️ Question
How far ahead does your organization plan for workforce growth?

Growth is an exciting opportunity. However, pursuing growth without proper workforce planning can lead to operational risks.
The most successful organizations scale intentionally. They invest in developing their employees ahead of time, before growth is needed. The ideal time to prepare your workforce is not when expansion starts, but well in advance.
How is your organization preparing for future growth?

Three workforce trends I'm watching closely this year:
• Retirement of experienced mariners
• Growing demand for specialized skills
• Increased investment in workforce development
The organizations preparing now will be in a much stronger position later.
Which trend concerns you most?
