An Update on PSFA SONA Systems:
SONA brings together faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students across PSFA to learn about and produce original research.
In use college-wide since 2016, the cloud-based system connects researchers, instructors, and students—supporting study recruitment, participation, and course credit. This semester alone, PSFA SONA hosted 2 PA studies, 4 COMM studies, and 11 JMS studies.
The system’s growth highlights its impact, with active student users increasing from 1,420 (Spring 2025) to 2,653 (Spring 2026), alongside significant growth in course participation across COM and JMS.
As a newly-minted R1, the College looks ahead to tracking publications supported by PSFA SONA and expanding research opportunities across disciplines.

Public perceptions of government food assistance are often shaped by stigma, but School of Communication Associate Director Rebecca de Souza wants to shift the narrative.
De Souza believes that access to food is a human right – not a commodity. Through her work and role as a core researcher at the San Diego State University Center for Communication, Health, and the Public Good, she advocates for food justice and awareness of the struggles many face in feeding themselves.
