“Students have to care.” 🎵📚

That’s the idea behind what’s happening right now at Beecher Community School District in Michigan.

With support from the St. Brown Foundation, Beecher is bringing Rhymes with Reason to students in grades 4–12—using popular music to build vocabulary, strengthen reading and writing, and give students a new way into literacy.

And we loved the way Beecher Superintendent Dr. Jendayi Gardner described what that could look like:
“You might hear Beyoncé, you might hear rapping, you might hear country music…”

Different sounds. Same goal: developing stronger readers, writers and communicators.

Big thanks to WNEM TV5 for spending time with our founder Austin Martin and the Beecher team to tell the story.

The RwR roster keeps growing. 🎵📚

We’re excited to welcome Priest Elementary School in Detroit, MI to Rhymes with Reason for the 2026–27 school year.

Students will be using the music they already know and love to build vocabulary, strengthen literacy skills, and bring a different kind of energy into learning.

“How can we make it fun for the kids?” 🎶📚

For Amon-Ra St. Brown that’s a big part of what makes the partnership between Rhymes with Reason and the St. Brown Foundation work.

Students are already listening to music, discovering artists and hearing new songs every day. Rhymes with Reason takes something they naturally gravitate toward and turns it into an opportunity to build vocabulary and literacy skills.

And at Durfee Elementary-Middle School in Detroit, students are already showing what can happen when learning starts there.

But this is only the beginning.

We’re so excited to announce more schools joining our collaboration with the St. Brown Foundation later this month. Stay tuned.

This World Literacy Day, we’re bringing something new to Charlotte. 🎶📚

Rhymes with Reason is proud to partner with Jaelan Phillips and the Jaelan Phillips Foundation to bring music-powered vocabulary and literacy learning to students at Northridge Middle School.

Music sits at the heart of both of our missions.

The Jaelan Phillips Foundation uses it to create opportunities for creativity, mentorship, and connection. At Rhymes with Reason, we use the music students already love as a bridge into vocabulary, reading comprehension, and confidence in the classroom.

Now, we’re bringing those missions together in Charlotte. As Jaelan puts it: “Music is a great way to get kids excited about learning and literacy.”

We’re excited to support Northridge students this school year—and even more excited about what this partnership can grow into.

What if we stopped asking students to leave the things they love at the classroom door?

They spent the summer listening to music, finding new artists, sharing songs with friends and learning every word to their favorites.

That familiarity can be an entry point for learning, too.

Rhymes with Reason turns music students already know into vocabulary instruction they can work through in about 15 minutes — hearing new words in songs, learning them in context, and putting them into practice.

Former superintendent Steve Dorsey joined us for a conversation about what it actually takes to reach today’s students.

His challenge to educators: before we ask students to change, we have to be willing to look at the systems, tools and learning experiences we’re putting in front of them.

Sometimes reaching students differently starts with being willing to do something differently.

“The school districts in America are getting the results they are designed to get.”

So what happens when those results aren’t good enough?

Former Providence Public Schools Superintendent Chris Maher makes the case for something education needs more of: creative solutions built around the students and teachers they’re actually meant to serve.

That means listening. Testing new ideas. Refining them. And being willing to rethink systems that aren’t producing the opportunities students deserve.

We’re continuing that conversation on August 17 with San Diego Unified Area Superintendent Steve Dorsey—this time looking inside a district currently piloting a boldly different approach to literacy through music.
