Check out what our 5th grade paleontologists are up to! During their Owl Pellet Dissection Lab, students discovered the bones found in owl pellets. They carefully extracted bones from owl pallets and correctly identified the bones they discovered just like paleontologists find real dinosaur bones.

Monday, March 21 was World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). Our wonderful guidance counselor, Mr.Candelario, organized a "Crazy Sock Day" for staff and students to celebrate and embrace Down Syndrome. According to Mr.Candelario, “World Down Syndrome Day helps educate the public on what Down Syndrome is and how to encourage those with Down Syndrome to participate in daily activities so they can live a full life and play a vital role in their community.” Enjoy our community photos!

Student Schedules
We are working hard to develop a daily schedule that best suits the needs of all students at Balboa and we will keep you informed as soon as decisions are being made. That said, we have decided to start our school day for on-line learning at 8:30 a.m. The start time was approved by a group of teachers and school leaders to help students be prepared and ready for their school day. If and when students return to school we will revert back to the regular schedule, 7:40 am - 2:05 pm.

The first day of school will be Monday, August 31, 2020. The schedule for the first week of school entails connecting with the teacher from 9:45-10:45 am on a daily basis as a check in meeting. This is the time where students will get to meet their teachers and get to know them. Please note that attendance will be taken so it is important that students join every day. Teachers will provide students and parents with “Welcome Back Week” training slides that will show you how to perform schoolwork, how to navigate Google Classroom and Seesaw, how to take care of laptops and much more.

During this first week, teachers will be taking their own “Welcome Back Week” training in regards to best practices for online learning and students' well being.
After the first week of school, students will participate in daily on-line learning from 8:30-12:30 p.m. for live or “synchronous” learning. Students will be provided with a lunch break followed by participation in non-live learning time called “asynchronous” learning time from 1:00-3:30 p.m.

During this asynchronous learning time, students will be afforded time to complete any assignments and will be able to communicate with their teachers as necessary.
This is a tentative schedule; the classroom teacher will share a more detailed schedule during the first week of school.

Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities will receive live instruction from their general education classroom teacher, their education specialist, and their related service providers via video conferencing in both whole group and small group as well as office hours to connect with teachers if they still have questions or need more support. Accommodations and assistive technology will be provided online as outlined in the student’s IEP. Families will be able to request a meeting with the IEP team to determine how IEP services will be delivered.

Attendance
Teachers will take student attendance daily and attendance will be based on both synchronous and asynchronous participation. If your child is going to be absent please call the attendance office at (619) 362-4130 and leave a message.

Distribution of devices Friday, August 28 & Saturday, August 29 - Walk up distribution - Main office gate. Family members must wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose.

Only new students and returning students without a device will receive one. (Students who received a device in the Spring of 2020 will keep and use it for the new school year.)

Distribution of school instructional materials and textbooks Week of August 31 - Sept. 4
We will be providing all students with textbooks and school instructional materials. In order to keep social distance guidelines and for the safety of all involved, we will be adhering to the schedule below for distribution.

DIRECTIONS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

On a blank, 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper please print your child's last name, first name, and Log-in/Student ID #. You will need to show this to the staff distributing materials.
Drive-thru option (preferred method): Birch Street parking lot. All family members must remain in their vehicle and wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose.
Open your trunk when reaching the distribution table and show the staff member the sheet with your child’s information. School staff will place all items in your trunk. You may also open a back door window for distribution.

Walk-up option: Birch Street gate. Only one person may wait in line for materials. You must wear a face mask covering your mouth and nose. Please be prepared and allow yourself adequate time as the walk-up option may prolong your wait time due to social distancing and may require two walking trips as the textbooks and instructional materials can be cumbersome to carry.

Horarios Escolares
Estamos trabajando arduamente para desarrollar un horario diario que se adapte mejor a las necesidades de todos los estudiantes de Balboa y lo mantendremos informado tan pronto como se tomen las decisiones. Dicho esto, hemos decidido comenzar nuestro día escolar para el aprendizaje en línea a las 8:30 a.m. La hora de inicio fue aprobada por un grupo de maestros y líderes escolares para ayudar a los estudiantes a estar preparados y listos para su día escolar. We need your help and planning. One thing we learned from our first online experience is that our students need a head-set with a MIC to speak and to block all external inevitable noises. We learned that students will have an easier time focusing on their lessons and anxiety if any is diminished greatly.
