Hello Roadrunners,
We hope you've had a wonderful summer, so far! Over the summer our amazing custodial staff has been working hard at deep cleaning our beautiful little school on the hill. We have also begun the long process of our campus modernization with architects and surveyors working to create a more updated campus for our students and the community.
The office staff will be returning Monday, August 16th at 9am and will be catching up on emails and responding as quickly as possible. Please note if you need to register your child, it’s best to call to make an appointment with our enrollment clerk, LaCynda McNulty, 619-344-3400 or email, [email protected].
Next week (week of 8/16) the school will begin receiving guidance and protocols from the district for the upcoming school year and we will share them as soon as we have complete information. This includes information about masks, orientations, and more...
We look forward to welcoming all of our students and families back on August 30th for the first day of school.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Happy Monday Rowan Roadrunners! This week will be our last week together until the new year 2021! I hope you all find joy in our Holiday Spirit Week.
We are also hoping many Rowan families join me and the staff in making some homemade cards and letters to show our support for all of the hospital workers in San Diego right now. We have a parent that is a nurse practitioner and brought this idea to me. Helping keep up the hard working hospital workers spirits during a very stressful time in the hospital is something we all can do to help this very challenging time.
We will have a drop off at Rowan Elementary this Saturday 12/19 from 10:00-12:00. All the cards and letters will be delivered across San Diego's hospitals. Let's show our hospital workers we are with them and are so grateful for all they are doing to help San Diego.

I would like to welcome you to the 2020 - 2021 school year. I hope you and your family were able to enjoy the recent summer break and are ready for a unique and exciting year. The San Diego Unified School District and the Rowan Elementary Staff have been actively developing plans for the opening of this unique school year. Many families were able to participate in the student materials pick up this past Thursday and Friday. If you were unable to come by, we will be open from 8:00-12:00 tomorrow, Monday August 31st for materials pickup (including student device check outs if your child needs to check out a computer).
As you prepare for the first day of school, I’d like to suggest a few things to consider for a successful start.
Organize an area for your child to do their best learning that includes all of the materials that might be needed throughout the school day (including their charged device)
If there are multiple people working/learning from home, earphones are a great benefit to minimize background noise when engaging in live Zoom gatherings.
Keep a lookout for your classroom Back to School Night the week of Sept. 7th. Information regarding the day and time will be coming soon from your teacher.
I will be hosting a Principal’s Chat on Friday, September 4th at 4:00 Zoom Meeting ID will be posted on our School Story in ClassDojo. I will be there to share any updates and answer any general questions about the school year or share any ideas you might have to strengthen the school experience at Rowan. Please feel free to reach out to me privately if you have any specific questions regarding your child’s school experience.
Back to School family traditions have been enjoyed in the past (ie. wearing a new back to school outfit, going out for a special treat at the end of the first day of school for ice cream / frozen yogurt…) and we suggest you continue these traditions and/ or begin new ones.
We would love to capture our Rowan Family’s first day of school traditions. Please share a photo of one of your family back to school / first day of school traditions by uploading a picture in the provided link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NU0YCsh601C9sZAy4vTgNbay52rQtAx3?usp=sharing
Enrollment Information
Rowan is projected to have approximately 250 students for the 2020-21 school year. We are confirming our enrollment information over the next 3 weeks. Just as other years, it is common practice to assess our enrollment by the end of the 3rd week in September. If we are over or under projected counts in specific grade levels, it will be possible that we would need to reorganize class assignments at that time. If you have any enrollment or attendance questions, please send an email to LaCynda McNulty, office clerk- [email protected].
Our physical office is currently closed to the public, but families can call the office 619-344-3400. Please leave a message if we are unable to pick up and we will return your call as quickly as possible.
Class Placement
Teachers have been sending welcome communication to introduce themselves and to give families important information to begin the year successfully. Please contact me if you have not received communication from your child’s teacher and I will make sure to connect you and the teacher as soon as possible!
First Week Of School- WELCOME WEEK
The first day of school is tomorrow, Monday, August 31. We will begin this school year online. Students will have access to differentiated, standards-based activities that build skills for online learning, develop social emotional skills, engage in content standards and provide an opportunity for voice and choice.
Each day teachers will make contact with their students to build community and begin establishing learning routines and procedures that will support the teaching and learning all year long. Please look for the daily Zoom ID and time to log in with your child’s teacher. Teachers will be reaching out to families through Classdojo. If you haven’t used Classdojo, please download the app and explore the features. School information will also be shared through the “School Story” link on Classdojo.
Parents will also have access to some online training that provides support with the online platforms and resources available. While families are engaging in training, teachers will be engaging in professional development.

Student School Day Overview
The San Diego Unified School District is committed to providing custom learning experiences based on student needs five days a week. After we engage in this first Welcome week, we will begin our normal daily schedules but our students will not be expected to participate in six hours of continuous video conferencing each day. Each school day will include daily live, online instruction, independent learning, and opportunities to work with other students in small groups.
Scheduled opportunities to communicate with teachers will be made available as well. Information regarding your child’s daily schedule will be communicated by your teacher by Wednesday, September 2nd. All Rowan teaching and learning will be following our regular start and end times of 9:00 am-3:30 pm.
Scheduled Return Date For Onsite Learning
The District continues to coordinate with UCSD and local and state health officials regarding a possible timeline for returning to onsite learning. Phase 1 of our reopening plan is currently being developed that will include small groups of identified students by appointment. More detail will come as they are developed. We encourage you to visit the SDUSD website for more information.
Communication
All communications from Rowan Elementary will continue to be sent through SchoolMessenger, ClassDojo and the Rowan page. Please make sure your current phone number and email address is up to date. You can update this information by emailing our office clerk, LaCynda McNulty- [email protected] or logging in through the ParentPortal that can be accessed through our district website website- www.sandi.net. Currently the Rowan Elementary website is under construction but should be up and running by the end of September.
Meal Distribution:
For students who would like to receive breakfast and lunch, we will have Meal Distribution curbside pick up available at Webster Elementary. This will start 8/31 and occur Monday through Friday, 12:00 PM-2:00 PM. Families will need to bring the child's ID or write student’s name and student ID on a piece of paper to show at pick up. Food Services is working on securing additional fruits, veggies, and a variety of other foods from our community partners. These will most likely be distributed 1x a week. Visit the district website for more information regarding free and reduced lunches.
