Kirsten and Julie presented at the California Educational Theatre Association 2025 conference at The Old Globe in San Diego yesterday. We held a 90 min session about engaging reluctant Theatre students through design vs only performance— we have found it hard for students to present after COVID and design opens up a whole other side of Theatre. Afterwards we caught the new musical at The Globe called HUZZAH! which was quite enjoyable and would eventually be great for high schools. It is about folks running a renaissance faire and is funny, has a good message, 3 strong female roles and lots of good supporting roles with character and often a song, plus a unit set! 😊

Show season is upon us! How are you making sure the backstage area has enough visibility to be safe, but isn't too bright or distracting for the audience? LED lighting is a good choice if you have a dedicated theatre space, but if you are in a shared space, consider some blue rope lighting. It is durable, easy to "install" with hooks, clips or gaff tape, and dim but enough to see backstage.

Looking for a summer PD? This is geared for the new Theatre teacher, the overwhelmed "Wearing ALL the Hats" teacher, the established Theatre Director that now has a tech theatre class and doesn't know what to do, and the director that has had to rely on parents to build. Join us this summer at La Jolla Playhouse for a one, two, three, or five day intensive, interact with the professionals of La Jolla Playhouse, and join a community of others like you.

Julie and I have organized student work in Chromebook boxes since COVID. I was in her classroom this week and found magic! She color coded the boxes and shelves so the students put their box in the correct period location. Hope spring eternal.
