to an afternoon of research and conversation about the Brazilian Amazon 🔥🌳

Looking back at the research talk “Fire and Punishment: Enforcement Incentives and Strategic Fire Use in the Brazilian Amazon,” presented by Anna Costola Pede, PhD Candidate at UC Santa Barbara.

The talk explored how satellite monitoring and environmental enforcement can shape deforestation strategies in the Brazilian Amazon, including how changes in monitoring technologies can influence the ways land clearing is carried out.

What do plants, landscapes, hair, and the human body have in common?
On October 2, Professor Jeffrey Hoelle, from the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will discuss “Cultivated: Plants, Hair, and the Aesthetic of Control.”
Drawing on ethnographic research in the Brazilian Amazon and beyond, Hoelle explores how cultivation shapes both landscapes and bodies, connecting cattle pastures, agricultural fields, lawns, hair salons, and everyday ideas about what should be considered “natural.”

As Brazil heads toward the 2026 elections, three leading scholars will come together for a conversation on the major political issues shaping this year’s race.
🎙️ Featuring:
Gladys Mitchell-Walthour — Dan T. Blue Endowed Chair and Professor of Political Science at North Carolina Central University. She is the author of The Politics of Survival (2023), winner of the Anna Julia Cooper Publication Award, and served as President of the Brazil Studies Association (2018–2020).
Guilherme Casarões — Associate Professor of Brazil Studies at Florida International University, specializing in Brazilian foreign policy, Brazil–Middle East relations, Latin American politics, and transnational far-right networks. He is a leading researcher and frequent commentator on Brazilian and international politics.
Fabio de Sá e Silva — Associate Professor of International Studies, Wick Cary Professor of Brazilian Studies, and Co-Director of the Center for Brazil Studies at the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on law, democracy, and Brazilian politics.

What can art reveal about memory, territory, ancestry, and resistance?

The Digital Brazil Project at San Diego State University invites you to experience ODU, an online exhibition that brings together theater, performance, embroidery, lace, painting, and installation in dialogue with Afro-diasporic cultures, African-origin religions, cosmologies, and ancestral knowledge.

The exhibition explores the intersections between art, ancestry, displacement, territory, and Black radical imagination — creating new ways of connecting past, present, and possible futures.
