ISSD (Iranian School Of San Diego) The Iranian School of San Diego is an educational entity affiliated with the Persian Cultural Center of San Diego (PCC).

Founded in 1988, ISSD is diaspora’s first accredited Persian-language educational institution. It offers classes on various language levels, Persian music (setar, santour, daf, etc.), theater , dance, painting, and social activities ranging from parenting classes to stress management workshops, ISSD relies on a tireless body of volunteers in both its administration as well as PTA team

Participation and Voter Turnout in Local Government

Though there is heightened public awareness of our national government, communities are not as involved in their local government efforts as they are with nationwide efforts. For example, voter turnout for local elections is at a much lower percentage compared to presidential elections. In the most recent presidential election, California voter turnout was 71.4% of registered voters. In the most recent midterm election, however, California voter turnout was about 50% of registered voters. Lack of participation in local governments, for whatever reason, affects policy changes and produces governing bodies that may not be as representative of their communities as they could be. What I Hope People Ask Me About Iran

When people find out my family is from Iran, they usually have questions. I don’t mind answering them at all. In fact, I wish people asked even more. But instead of asking about politics or the headlines they’ve seen on the news, I wish they asked about the Iran I’ve been lucky enough to know all throughout my years of growing up, traveling back and forth. Finding My Voice Through Advocacy

This past week, I had the privilege of participating in the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) Civic Leadership Program, an experience that allowed me to advocate for the Iranian American community on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. At a time of heightened political tension involving Iran, I joined fellow Iranian American students and young professionals from across the country to meet with members of Congress and discuss how U.S. policies affect Iranian Americans and their families. Together, we advocated for three pieces of legislation that have the potential to improve the lives of not only our own families, but also millions of people connected to Iran: the I.R.A.N. ISSD Alumni
The Iranian School of San Diego boasts a significant history, having been in operation since 1988, and has positively impacted numerous students and families over the years. The school takes pride in its extensive alumni network, consisting of successful individuals who have made notable contributions to both the Iranian American and global communities. Many alumni now have children enrolled at ISSD, establishing a strong multi-generational bond with the school. In an effort to showcase these accomplishments and underline the value of ISSD, Peyk is highlighting profiles detailing the lives and experiences of the school’s graduates. We are reaching out to select ISSD alumni with a series of questions to not only check on their well-being, but also to introduce them to current students and parents. These alumni could potentially serve as significant role models for the present and upcoming student body. Our guest in this issue is Nusheen Baradaran, a civil engineer specialized in land development.

The Importance of Reading

I have always loved reading. Some of my earliest memories involve staying up past my bedtime just to finish one more chapter or carrying a book with me everywhere in case I had a few spare minutes to read. While the stories themselves were entertaining, I did not realize at the time how much reading was shaping the way I viewed the world.
